Hockey Wilderness Discusses Mikael Granlund

SBN Wild blog Hockey Wilderness takes a closer look at Mikael Granlund, new member of the Minnesota Wild.

Islanders use acquired pick to take Brock Nelson from Warroad

With that, the first round has come to a close.

Continue

Anaheim, with a second pick, select Emmerson Etem

Huge pick by the Ducks. Huge. 29th pick and they get the fastest kid in the draft. Un. Be. Lieveable.

Continue

Sharks select Charlie Coyle

Pass on the chance to draft the SoCal kid in Emmerson Etem. Amazing.

Continue

Phoenix makes another selection: Mark Visentin

A goaltender taken at the end of the first round that was slated to go at the end of the 2nd round. Not sure I like this pick for them.

Continue

Alex Ovechkin... I mean Washington Capitals select Evgeni Kuznetsov

Another Russian for the Caps. OK pick. Still can’t believe Etem is falling this far.

Continue

Panthers select Quinton Howden

So, they trade away Keith Ballard, a solid shut down d-man and take a forward. Fairly certain Florida is trying to rebuild, and trying to do so in one fell swoop.

Continue

Vancouver trades pick to Florida in Multi-Player deal

Florida will make three picks in the first round. Rebuild much?

Continue

Stanley Cup Champions select Kevin Hayes

Etem continues to fall, and the Hawks take a kid ranked 49th by TSN? Unreal.

Continue

Buffalo Sabres select Mark Pysyk

Another excellent pick by the Sabres. Ugh. Please don’t turn into Tyler Myers… please?

Continue

Habs use their new pick to select Jarred Tinordi

6’ 5" Captain of the US U-18 team. Solid pick. Not sure they needed to trade up to get him, though.

Continue

Red Wings select: Who Cares?

I kid, I kid. They took Riley Sheahan out of Notre Dame

Continue

Pittsburgh Penguins select Beau Bennett

New free fall target is Emmerson Etem. Another kid who was slated by many as top ten, and by most as top 15.

Continue

Florida selects Nick Bjugstad - Blaine High School Alumn

Bjugstad is a 6’ 5" center headed for the U of M next year. Great pick this far down.

Continue

Nahville keeps pick, selects Austin Watson

Solid forward pick. Hockey Wilderness profiled him as a possible at #9. Good selection for the Preds.

Continue

Saint Louis selects Vladimir Tarasenko

A solid pick, strong forward. Good trade for the Blues.

Continue

Ottawa trades the 16th pick to St Louis for prospect defenseman

I don’t like this decision at all for Ottawa. They have struggled in the draft recently, but wow. Why give up a first rounder who went 17th last season for the 16th pick this season.

Continue

Kings select Derek Forbert - Duluth East alumn

Kings trade up to take Derek Forbert. I thought for sure it was Etem.

Continue

Saint Louis selects Jaden Schwartz

Um… I’ve never heard of this kid… so… yeah.

Continue

Phoenix Coyotes Right the Ship, Select Gormley

With the 13th pick, the players chosen by most to go in the top five have finally been selected.

Continue

Finally Fowler is selected by Anaheim

Cam Fowler, the top rated d-man in the draft goes to Anaheim. Considered by many to be like Chris Pronger, Fowler will fit right in with the Ducks.

Continue

Goaltender Jack Campbell goes tenth overall to Dallas

Top rated goaltender in the draft. Slated to be an elite goalie.

Continue

With the tenth pick the Rangers select Dylan McIlrath

Fowler and Gormley continue to drop. Unbelievable.

Continue

Wild keep selection: Take Mikael Granlund

There was a lot of talk about trading down with the top d-men available, but Fletcher decided to go with Mikael Granlund, a center out of Finland. Hockey Wilderness chose Granlund in the SBN mock draft, and I chose Granlund in the Pro Hockey News draft as well.

Continue

Atlanta takes Burmistrov

Atlanta risks it’s future on another Russian player. Kovalchuk did not work out so well for them… hmmm…

Both top d-men fall to the Wild.

Continue

Jeff Skinner to Carolina with the seventh pick

The Wild will indeed have a choice of one of the top two d-men available. If they select a defensemen, fans will riot.

Trade down, Fletch. Trade down.

Continue

Stevie Y takes Brett Connolly with the sixth pick

Hip health issues be damned, Tampa Bay apparently had him higher than the two best d-men on the board.

This is going to be interesting for the Wild. Tough to pass on those two defensemaen.

Continue

The New York Islanders select Nino Neiderriter

Highest drafted Swiss born player in NHL history.

Continue

Columbus selects Ryan Johansen

Not expected to go this high. Great pick, though

Continue

Gudbranson third overall

Florida bucks the trend and selects Erik Gudbranson.

Continue

Seguin to Boston

With the Second pick, Boston uses it’s acquired pick from Toronto to select Tyler Seguin. Again, as expected. If the expected picks continue, the next selection should be Cam Fowler.

Continue

Hall first overall pick

As expected, Taylor Hall goes first overall to the Edmonton Oilers.

NHL Draft Stream: Wild Hold the Ninth Pick

The first round of the NHL draft takes place tonight, and can be viewed on VS in the US, and TSN in Canada. Coverage this evening begins at 6PM central.

As it stands right now, the Wild hold the ninth overall pick. Hockey Wilderness has a breakdown of who may or may not be available at that position, who the Wild should take if available, and who the "experts" think the Wild will take. The one thing that is most haunting to Wild fans right now is that the last time the Wild picked in the 9 spot, they selected James Sheppard.

It should be an interesting evening, as in the last week there have been only a handful of trades, and the draft is the second busiest trading period in the NHL. Also to be noted is that fact that the majority of high quality free agents have been re-signed by their current teams, meaning tonight and tomorrow could make for interesting theater as NHL GMs try to find solutions to their problems that now cannot be found via free agency.

Stick with SBN Minnesota for constant draft updates, and make sure you join the conversation either here or over at Hockey Wilderness on their draft open thread.
