Percy Harvin 'Doesn't Know' If Sleep Apnea Is Causing Migraines

Earlier we noted that Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Percy Harvin is suffering from sleep apnea and that may be the cause of persistent migraine headaches that have limited his playing time.

Judd Zulgad of StarTribune.com reports that Harvin is still unclear whether treating the sleep apnea will cause the migraines to go away.

“I don’t know if it’s the solution,” he said. “I know one of the main causes of migraines is a lack of sleep, so with the tests they were showing that I wasn’t going into a deep sleep. I was always waking up and things like that.”

Harvin, who missed most of training camp following the death of his grandmother and then the onset of migraines, has not had an episode since the diagnosis.

Report: Percy Harvin's Health Problems Caused By Sleep Apnea?

Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Percy Harvin was the subject of much concern during the preseason, given his migraine headaches and a collapse at practice.

Michael David Smith of ProFootballTalk.com has assembled some new details regarding Harvin’s health, citing tonight’s NBC broadcast and an interview with Andrea Kremer.

Harvin’s hospital stay helped doctors determine that he has sleep apnea and get him the appropriate treatment. Harvin has been given a device that pumps air into his nose while he sleeps, and that seems to be working for him.

The best news is that Harvin’s doctors believe the sleep apnea was the primary cause of the migraines that have plagued him for much of his life. The breathing device is working well enough for him that he’s no longer on medication, and he may finally be able to put his migraines behind him.

Percy Harvin Doubtful To Play Saturday Against Seattle

Percy Harvin didn’t participate in Thursday’s practice at the Metrodome, leaving his status for Saturday’s game against Seattle in doubt according to Tom Pelissero.

“He really didn’t practice (Wednesday),” Childress said. "He stood there with his pads and helmet on, just to kind of (get used to) his pads and caught a couple footballs. … That’s really the extent of what he did aside from stretching.

“He’s got another test he’s got to accomplish here before he’s cleared to play.”

Interestingly, Childress says that “test” encompasses more than just the migraine issues.

Asked if the tests Harvin has been undergoing are specific to his ongoing migraine problems, Childress said, “They’re not specific to that. Kind of all-encompassing.”

At least it still is just the preseason.

Harvin Might Not Be On Kick Return Duty This Season

Percy Harvin returned to Minnesota Vikings practice Wednesday, but it remains unclear if he will return to kick return duty this season.

“I know you want him back there,” special teams coordinator Brian Murphy told ESPN 1500 Wednesday. “But his health has got to allow it, and right now it’s an unpredictable situation, and we’ll make plans accordingly.”

“It’s going to have to be a week-to-week decision,” Murphy said. “Obviously, his situation isn’t one that you can predict. That’s the reason why we’re trying to rep as many people as we can — to have alternatives.”

According to the article, Darius Reynaud and Albert Young are the current favorites to take over if Harvin is unavailable. Other possibilities include Asher Allen and Marcus Sherels.

Percy Harvin Returned To Practice Wednesday

The Minnesota Vikings got some good news Wednesday and it was relayed to the media when ESPN Twin Cities’ Tom Pelissero tweeted the following:

Percy Harvin is back on the field. Unclear how much he’ll do. Absent: Jared Allen, Kenny Onatolu, Ray Small, Jimmy Kennedy. #Vikings

He wouldn’t be returning unless doctors gave him the green light, and since last week’s practice scare is said to be unrelated to Harvin’s ongoing migraine issues, this should work out well.

Percy Harvin Collapses On Practice Field; Taken Away In Ambulance

Minnesota Vikings' wide receiver Percy Harvin, after jogging out onto the practice field this morning, vomited and eventually collapsed.  He was taken away to by an ambulance, according to Chip Scoggins of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.

Harvin, who has suffered from severe migraines, was not on the field for the start of practice. He was seen talking to head athletic trainer Eric Sugarman outside the locker room at Winter Park and then jogged onto the field to watch practice. A few minutes later, Harvin vomited and then fell to the ground.

Practice continued as the team’s medical staff tended to him. After about 10 minutes, a police car and ambulance from the Hennepin County Medical Center arrived and EMTs tended to Harvin as practice stopped and players watched.

It sounds like this might be connected to the migraine headache problem he's been suffering with for years now.  Let's keep our fingers crossed and hope that that's ALL it is.

We'll keep you updated as rapidly as we are able.
