The Minnesota Golden Gophers took advantage of a big turnover by the Michigan State Spartans, and they have taken a 14-7 lead in East Lansing as time winds down in the first quarter of play.

The Spartans had taken over at their own 29-yard line after a Minnesota punt, and their first play was a handoff to running back Edwin Baker. The handoff never really got completed, and the ball went to the ground. Minnesota's Keanon Cooper recovered the fumble at the Spartans' 26, and the Gophers were in business.

After a 13-yard run for MarQueis Gray moved the Gophers closer to the Michigan State end zone, Gray went back to his favorite target, Da'Jon McKnight, finding the big wide receiver in the back left corner of the end zone for a 13-yard touchdown reception and a 14-7 Minnesota lead.

A penalty was assessed after the play on the Gophers, and the Spartans took advantage by returning the kickoff into Minnesota territory. That's where we stand now, as the Gophers lead the Spartans 14-7 with five minutes remaining in the first quarter of play.
