Wimbledon 2012 Results: Mardy Fish Shakes Off Poor Performance By Besting David Goffin In Straight Sets

Minnesota's Mardy Fish had a very tough matchup in round two. Or rather, he had a tough time with someone he was expected to handily beat. James Ward took Fish to five sets, and left him somewhat tired out for an eventual matchup with David Goffin in the third round. Fortunately for Fish, he played much better than he did against Ward and took home a win in straight sets, though sets two and three were tiebreaks.

The final score was 6-3, 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (8-6). Fish struggled so much with Ward because he has such a great return, and his serve also happened to be off. It was a combination that also cost him his match. But against Goffin, Fish had 64 percent of his first serves in, and won 89 percent of his first serve points.

Topping out at 131 miles per hour, his first serve was definitely what did it for him. But he also returned very well. Goffin actually had more of his first serves in, but only won 75 percent of his first serve points. Fish will now move on to the next round, where he'll take on Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. That's a very tough matchup, to be sure. Tsonga is the No. 5 seed for the tournament.
