The second day of competition is over at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London and the United States stands in second place in terms of total medals, just one behind China.The Chinese have earned a total of 12 medals through two days, six of them being gold. The United States is only one medal behind them overall, but the Americans have just three gold medals.
No residents of Minnesota earned medals on Sunday but swimmer Rachel Bootsma placed 11th in the semifinals of the women's 100-meter backstroke:
Bootsma, of Eden Prairie, finished 11th in Sunday night’s semifinals of the women’s 100-meter backstroke at London’s Aquatics Centre. Only the top eight advanced to Monday’s finals. With little energy left after her standout performance at last month’s Olympic trials, Bootsma finished the semifinals in 1 minute, 00.04 seconds, .01 slower than her time in Sunday morning’s qualifying heats.
