When Andy Murray met Roger Federer in the 2012 Wimbledon Championship match on Sunday, the competition was jam-packed with a slew of compelling story lines that potentially could intrigue even the most casual of viewers.

On Monday morning it was clear the viewing public was interested.

According to Deitsch, the highest rated tennis event for ESPN prior to Sunday was the 1995 Aussie Open Final, which pitted Andre Agassi against Sampras.

Murray came into the match as the first British-born male to reach the final at the All England Club since 1938 and was attempting to become the first since 1936 to take home the title.

Federer earned his seventh championship at Wimbledon (tying him with Pete Sampras for the most all-time), his 17th Grand Slam title and the No. 1 ranking in the world with the win over Murray.
