Edina native Mardy Fish needed two tiebreakers, but earned a first-round win over Go Soeda at the U.S. Open on Monday.
The 23rd-ranked Fish recorded a 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-2), 6-3 win. He had a 41-22 edge in winners and 12-3 edge in aces.
Elsewhere on the men's side, third-ranked Andy Murray scored a 6-2, 6-4, 6-1 over American Alex Bogomolov Jr. Murray had a 46-24 edge in winners.
On the women's side, third-ranked Maria Sharapova cruised in her first-round match, advancing with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Melinda Czink. Sharapova had 24 winners compared to Czink's eight, along with five aces to Czink's one.
Fifth-ranked Petra Kvitova had a little more trouble, but earned a 7-6 (8-6) 6-1 win over Polona Hercog in her first-round match. The edge in winners was just 22-16 in favor of Kvitova, who also had one more unforced error than Hercog.
