Women's top-seed Victoria Azarenka advanced to the third round of the 2012 U.S. Open Wednesday, as she easily defeated Kirsten Flipkens, 6-2, 6-2, in the second round in Flushing Meadows, NY. Azarenka will play Jie Zheng in the third round.
So far, Azarenka and Zheng, who defeated Magdalena Rybarikova, 6-3, 6-1, are one of four ladies to move onto the third round on Day 3 of the single-elimination tournament.
The other women's competitors to advance are: America's Mallory Burdette, who knocked off Lucie Hradecka, 6-2, 6-4, and Nadia Petrova, who beat fellow Russian Simona Halep, 6-3, 6-1.
Later in the day, Kim Clijsters will take on Laura Robson at Arther Ashe Stadium. That match will begin around 5 p.m. ET.
At 7 p.m. ET, Maria Sharapova will face off against Lourdes Dominguez Lino in a second-round match.
On the men's side, Igor Sijsling defeated Daniel Gimeno-Traver, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4, in a first-round contest.
Meanwhile, the primetime match-up is between Andy Murray and Ivan Dodig.
