2012 U.S. Open Tennis Results: Andy Murray Wins First Grand Slam Title

Andy Murray defeated Novak Djokovic in five sets Monday to win the 2012 U.S. Open. The victory gave Murray the first Grand Slam title of his career.

Murray jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, winning back-to-back close sets to start the match. He won the first set 7-6 including a 12-10 tiebreaker then again prevailed in a close second set winning 7-5. While it looked as if Murray might cruise to his first Grand Slam title, Djokovic wouldn't go away that easily.

Djokovic won the third set 6-2 then evened the match with a 6-3 win in the fourth set. Djokovic committed 19 unforced errors in both the first and second sets, but cut his unforced errors down to six and nine in the third and fourth sets.

The two went to the deciding fifth set and once again Murray jumped out quickly breaking Djokovic's serve twice en route to a 3-0 lead. Just like he did before, Djokovic mounted a comeback, winning the next two games to make it 3-2. However, it was not to be for Djokovic as Murray won the next two games to win the fifth set 6-2 and capture his first Grand Slam title.

The match was one of the longest finals in U.S. Open history, lasting just under five hours.
