U.S. Open 2012: Mardy Fish Pulled Out Due To 'Heath Reasons'

It was unfortunate to see Edina native Mardy Fish pull out of his fourth-round matchup against No. 1 seed Roger Federer. Fish had been playing well, so it was unclear at first what went wrong. According to the Pioneer Press, Fish actually had to pull out against Federer due to "health reasons."

There's no details on what specifically went wrong, but Fish, who was seeded No. 23 for the tournament, missed around two months this season due to an accelerated heartbeat, and he also had a medical procedure in May. Given the nature of that issue, it's likely that his condition could have been exacerbated by the fact that his third-round match against Gilles Simon went the full five sets, lasting for more than three hours.

That match didn't wrap up until after 1:00 a.m. eastern on on Sunday. Fish didn't appear at the post-match news conference. Fish's round two matchup also went a full five sets, and he was forced into two tiebreaks in his opening matchup, so it's been a long tournament for him through his first three matches. It's unfortunate to see him drop out, but Federer was on an absolute hot streak anyway and was heavily favored to win.
