Could the Minnesota Vikings get a young, talented receiver like Robert Woods in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft?

The Minnesota Vikings entered this offseason with one big problem, and a lot of expectations. The problem was wide receiver Percy Harvin, which the team took care of by trading him to the Seattle Seahawks for, among other things, a first-round selection in the 2013 NFL Draft. The expectations came from the team making the playoffs last season after being one of the league's worst teams the previous year.

With such a competitive division, they'll need to build and have a strong offseason to make an improvement on where they were last season. Fortunately, the first-round pick they traded for should help nicely, given their needs.

Now they pick at No. 23 and No. 25 in the first round. Dan Kadar of SB Nation released his latest mock draft on Monday, and he has the Vikings taking Kansas State linebacker Arthur Brown with the first of the team's two picks:

The Vikings need young athleticism on defense and Brown is the most athletic linebacker in the draft. He's not the most powerful player and will need to be kept clean by the defensive line. But he can get to the ball in a hurry and finish nicely.

Brown definitely makes sense for the Vikings. They've been looking for some help at the position for some time now and Brown has been rising up draft boards this offseason. You can find his scouting report here. With the No. 25 pick, Kadar gives the Vikings Southern California wide receiver Robert Woods:

It's easy to forget that entering the 2012 college football season, Woods was routinely talked about as the top wide receiver in the nation. He was slowed by injuries last season and got overshadowed by sensation Marqise Lee. But Woods is a savvy route runner with good hands. He gets the nod over Keenan Allen because he's a more dependable player.

Both players would definitely help the Vikings a great deal, but the Woods pick is among the most interesting in the first round of this draft. He's been very under the radar, but before his injury issues, he was one of, if not the top wide receiver in the nation, and could be a huge get for the Harvin-less Vikings.

The Minnesota Vikings have two picks in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft, and they could stand to add some young talent to an aging defense.

The Minnesota Vikings are in a solid position to make things happen, provided they can build on a surprisingly-strong 2012. Few saw them competing to the extent they managed to last season, especially after having a top-five pick in the previous draft.

More: Visit Daily Norseman for more on the Vikings

Now, they're picking much later, at No. 23, but they've improved on that position significantly since the offseason began, by trading Percy Harvin to the Seattle Seahawks in exchange for the No. 25 pick overall. With those two picks, the Vikings stand a good chance of landing some serious impact players in the draft.

Don Banks of SI.com released his latest mock draft on Wednesday, and he has the Vikings taking defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson out of Missouri with the No. 23 pick:

Most mocks have Richardson going in the top 15, with a bunch of those to No. 14 Carolina. But if Utah defensive tackle Star Lotulelei falls to the Panthers, Richardson could tumble all the way to the Vikings. With Minnesota having another first rounder to work with, thanks to the Percy Harvin trade with Seattle, the Vikings are in position to take the explosive and disruptive Richardson as Kevin Williams' eventual replacement.

Richardson would be a good pick for the Vikings, who need some youth along their defensive line. With the No. 25 pick, Banks has Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te'o headed to Minnesota:

Te'o comes off this board before top-rated Notre Dame tight end Tyler Eifert does, and some would say the odds of that happening aren't good. But the Vikings already have a Notre Dame tight end (Kyle Rudolph) and I'm not convinced they're targeting Cal receiver Keenan Allen with this pick, as many mockers are. The Vikings seem like a decent fit for Te'o, and Minnesota GM Rick Spielman does have a well-chronicled appreciation for Irish talent. The Vikings could still land a quality receiver along the lines of USC's Robert Woods at No. 52 in the second round.

It's true that Te'os stock seems to be all over the place after the scandal and then the fact that he generally looked poor at the scouting combine. Still, most feel like Te'o will be able to get the job done and he should be an immediate starter with the Vikings.

Dan Kadar of SB Nation released his mock on Monday, and he has the Vikings going a similar route, with a defensive tackle and an inside linebacker. However, he has Kansas State linebacker Arthur Brown going to the team at No. 23 and Ohio State defensive tackle Johnathan Hankins going at No. 25.

The Minnesota Vikings put themselves in a great position in the 2013 NFL Draft, with two first round picks.

The Minnesota Vikings entered the offseason with a lot of expectations and one big concern: wide receiver Percy Harvin. Minnesota dealt with that problem by trading Harvin to the Seattle Seahawks, and bolstered their potential for making big things happen this offseason by earning a first-round pick in the 2013 NFL Draft in the trade.

After signing wide receiver Greg Jennings, the Vikings are in a good place to bring in two impact players in the draft. They have their original No. 23 pick in the first round, and now the No. 25 pick from Seattle. Dan Kadar of SB Nation released his latest mock draft on Monday and he's got both picks going to the defense.

First, he sent Kansas State linebacker Arthur Brown at No. 23:

The Vikings need young athleticism on defense and Brown is the most athletic linebacker in the draft. He's a run and tackle linebacker who can truly play sideline to sideline. He's an upgrade over Tyrone McKenzie, though the Vikings will likely consider players like Alec Ogletree or Manti Te'o as well. Adding a good defensive tackle should be a priority in this draft as well, but they can sit on the position for a round or two.

Then, he send defensive tackle Johnathan Hankins out of Ohio State at No. 25:

If the Vikings are content with Greg Jennings being their No. 1 receiver, a player with Hankins' ability could help improve an aging defensive line. Hankins was a versatile player for Ohio State and made plays from a variety of spots on the line.

Both picks would add immediate starters to the defense and would bring some young talent to an aging unit. You can find Brown's scouting report here. His stock is rising rapidly these days. Hankins also has a scouting report, which you can find here.

The Minnesota Vikings are in a good position to land a starter on defense late in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft.

The Minnesota Vikings went from bad team to good team in a very short amount of time. They went from a top-three pick to being a contender in the playoffs, which means they'll have a late pick this time around with lofty expectations. Fortunately, they're a team without significant needs.

Rather, they're a team without multiple needs, meaning they stand a shot at getting a lot better with their first-round pick in the 2013 NFL Draft. Minnesota is in a position, picking No. 23 in the first round, where they can afford to draft based more on need than value.

Matthew Fairburn and Dan Kadar collaborated on the latest SB Nation mock draft on Monday and they have the Vikings adding a talented and athletic player to the roster with the drafting of linebacker Arthur Brown out of Kansas State:

The Vikings need young athleticism on defense and Brown is the most athletic linebacker in the draft. He's a run and tackle linebacker who can truly play sideline to sideline. He's an upgrade over Tyrone McKenzie, though the Vikings will likely consider players like Alec Ogletree or Manti Te'o as well.
Minnesota has been in need of an athletic player for some time, and Brown definitely fits the bill.
The Minnesota Vikings continue to have wide receivers come their way in the first round of SB Nation's 2013 NFL Mock Draft.

The Minnesota Vikings are at the NFL Scouting Combine in full force, but they're not necessarily keeping their eyes on guys that are going to go in the top 10. They've had issues over the past few seasons and have found themselves with more than their fair share of top selections, but this time around, they're picking late.

That's due to an appearance in the playoffs, despite picking in the top three selections of the 2012 NFL Draft. Now they're picking at No. 23, but they definitely have some holes to fill. That's about the point in the draft where many teams feel good about abandoning the "best player available" strategy to fill one of their needs.

Matthew Fairburn of SB Nation released his latest mock draft on Monday and he has the Vikings going with both strategies for the most part. He has the Vikings taking wide receiver Cordarrelle Patterson, the wide receiver out of Tennessee:

Whether or not Percy Harvin stays with the Vikings, they need to find another weapon in the passing game. Some will be surprised to see Cordarrelle Patterson this low, but he's rough around the edges. Allen and Hopkins are more complete wide receivers in my eyes.

Patterson has been mocked to the Vikings multiple times this offseason and that's not likely to change much. What could change it is the fact that Patterson has been having a strong combine and might be boosting his stock out of Minnesota' reach.

That being said, if the Vikings are out for a receiver to give Christian Ponder a weapon in the passing game (one that is actually going to stick around), they are in a good place in the draft. Guys like Tavon Austin out of West Virginia, Kennan Allen out of California and DeAndre Hopkins of Clemson might go in this range.

Could the Minnesota Vikings add a weapon for Christian Ponder in the 2013 NFL Draft?

The Minnesota Vikings made the jump from having a top three pick in last year's draft to making it into the playoffs this past season. They came a long way in a very short amount of time and their early pick paid off in dividends, as Matt Kalil played very well in his role.

Now, they will have to draft smarter, as they pick in the back-end of the first round, after every non-playoff team and the few that they out-lived in the playoffs, as well.

They've got the No. 23 overall pick in the first round and a few needs, but one popular opinion seems to be adding a wide receiver for Christian Ponder to throw to. Dan Kadar of SB Nation released his latest mock draft on Monday and he has the Vikings doing just that, adding DeAndre Hopkins, the receiver out of Clemson:

The Vikings have a few needs, chief amongst them youth on defense. But a wide receiver like Hopkins could do wonders for Christian Ponder's career. It would also give Minnesota some flexibility with Percy Harvin going forward.

The Vikings have Harvin on the roster, but there have been plenty of issues with him. Last season, he was unhappy, and seemed to demand a trade, and then the Vikings were somehow unhappy with him. This offseason, it's been more of the same, with reports coming out that both sides either want to part ways or get a long term contract done.

Still, Harvin doesn't entirely fit the bill of a No. 1 receiver, regardless. Hopkins does, and could grow into that role relatively quickly, especially if Ponder makes the next leap in his progress as the Vikings hope. The pick would also seem to fulfill the "best player available" criteria.

Could the Minnesota Vikings look to bolster their aging defensive line in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft?

The Minnesota Vikings came a long way in a very short time this past season, making the playoffs after having a top three pick in the 2012 NFL Draft. They hope to be counted among the NFL's elite, but they won't have another high draft pick to help them make the next jump.

They're picking at No. 23 this time around, but there promises to be some great players available, either way. Putting it into perspective, the Vikings have a shot at getting one of the top 23 players in the entire nation. Still though, it's a far cry from a top three pick.

Matthew Fairburn and Dan Kadar collaborated on the latest SB Nation mock draft on Monday, and they have the Vikings addressing a need on defense in the first round. They have Minnesota taking Sharrif Floyd, the defensive tackle out of Florida:

The Vikings are by no means desperate at defensive tackle, but the team would benefit from some pass rushing ability on the interior. Sharrif Floyd probably won't fall this far on draft day, but if he does, the Vikings will be tempted. He's a player with violent hands and the quickness to penetrate into the backfield.

As noted, the Vikings don't have a huge need on the defensive line, but after investing in their offense in recent years, the defense is hurting for some big-name playmakers, especially given the age of some of their starters.

Floyd will likely be gone before this pick, but if he's there, the Vikings could employ the "best player available" strategy and get Floyd a ticket to Minnesota. It's likely he'd be an immediate starter and impact player on that line.

The Minnesota Vikings could be looking to add some offensive firepower in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft.

The Minnesota Vikings made some serious strides this past season, and had their rookie first-round pick, Matt Kalil, make the Pro Bowl. After making the playoffs this year, they won't have the luxury of picking in the top-end of the draft this time around, so it will be tough to bring in some high-impact players to contribute.

And there are still plenty of needs in Minnesota. Their defense played exceptionally well this season, while the offense lagged behind at times. Quarterback Christian Ponder is still the guy going forward, but the Vikings might need to give him some more weapons to work with.

Dan Kadar of SB Nation released his latest mock draft on Monday, and he has them doing just that, taking Tennessee wide receiver Cordarrelle Patterson with the No. 23 pick.

If the Vikings want to make Christian Ponder more than a game manager, he needs better receiving threats on the outside. Patterson is one of the best vertical threats in the draft this year and can be used in the return game as well.

Minnesota really only had Percy Harvin this past season, and he has been banged up off and on throughout the past few years. With Adrian Peterson carrying more than his share of the weight on offense, coming just short of breaking the NFL's single-season rushing record, the Vikings really do need to add some more pop to the passing game.

Patterson would do that. He'd be a big deep threat who could play and run those simple routes from the get-go as he learns more and more of the playbook throughout the season. Most of the top defensive talent in this draft will be going fast, so it is likely that the best player available would be an offensive player at No. 23.

Will the Minnesota Vikings add more weapons for Christian Ponder in the 2013 NFL Draft?

The Minnesota Vikings made it to the playoffs this season, against all odds and against everyone's expectations. Coming off major knee surgery, running back Adrian Peterson came just short of breaking the single-season rushing record and the aging defense didn't look like they even deserved the "aging" label.

Still, they're one season removed from a top five pick, and they'll need to be successful in free agency as well as have another good draft when the 2013 selection process rolls around.

Matthew Fairburn of SB Nation released his latest mock draft on Monday, and he has the team going with the offensive side of the ball, drafting Cordarrelle Patterson, wide receiver out of Tennessee:

Minnesota's offense may be built around Adrian Peterson, but it's apparent it needs speed on the outside at receiver. Cordarrelle Patterson is a burner who can start his career as a vertical threat and gadget player. The draft is very deep on defense, so Minnesota can look to improve that side of the ball in later rounds.

At that point in the draft, Patterson might just fit the best player available label, and he also fills a need. As noted, Peterson played out of his mind in 2012, but the Vikings routinely faced teams stacking against the run because they didn't fear quarterback Christian Ponder.

When Percy Harvin went down with an injury, they feared the passing game even less. Patterson is a hugely athletic talent and he should be a big part of the Minnesota offense from day one, if they manage to snag him in the draft. However, there is some sentiment that he could go earlier.

Head to Daily Norseman to discuss the draft, as they've switched into full-on offseason mode.

North Dakota State won the FCS Championship on Saturday, besting Sam Houston State, 39-13.

The North Dakota State Bison walked all over Sam Houston State on Saturday, winning the FCS Championship, 39-13. Brock Jensen scored on three rushing touchdowns, two of them coming from one yard out and one being a 20-yard scamper in the second quarter.

North Dakota State got things started off slow with a 32-yard field goal in the first quarter, and Sam Houston State responded with one of their own. When Jensen went for that 20-yard touchdown, the Bearkats responded with one of their own, as well.

But that's when things got out of hand.

Jensen and Sam Ojuri put up rushing touchdowns for the Bison in the third quarter to go up 25-10, and another field goal was all the Bearkats were able to manage before the Bison scored two more touchdowns in the fourth for insurance, though it was hardly necessary.

In all, the Bison managed to put up 300 yards rushing on the ground, while Jensen managed to avoid mistakes in the passing game with 115 yards and no touchdowns and no interceptions. Brian Bell, on the other hand, threw for 255 yards for the Bearkats, but had three interceptions. Chris Grett attempted three passes, and two of them were intercepted.

It was simply domination from the second half onward for the Bison.
