Down eight at the half, Minnesota didn't really stand a chance on John Shurna's special night in front of his home crowd at Welsh-Ryan Arena in Evanston, Illinois. Midway through the second half, Shurna broke the Northwestern all-time scoring record of 1,900.
The Golden Gophers shot better from long distance in the second half, but was just 9-for-27 overall, preventing them from chipping into their halftime deficit. Both teams were well over 50-percent shooting in the first half, but both shot just 33-percent in a sloppier second half that saw Minnesota turn it over another nine times, giving them 21 for the game.
Julian Welch scored a game-high 21 points and Joe Coleman added 12 for the Gophers.
Minnesota has lost three straight and now have three straight against Top 25 teams, so their chances at dancing are not very good right now.

Northwestern's John Shurna needed just 17 points on Saturday night against Minnesota to become the school's all-time leading scorer in front of his home crowd at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
Shurna scored 12 points in the first half, leaving him just five shy of breaking the record of 1,900 points, which was set on March 6, 1976 by Billy McKinney against Michigan. Shurna was all but guaranteed to break the record in the second half, as the senior averages a little over 20 points per game.
Shurna broke the record midway through the second half when he hit a three-pointer to give the Wildcats a 10-point lead. You can check it out here on the Big Ten Network's website.
