Big Ten Supports College Football Playoff System, Minnesota AD Says

Minnesota athletic director Joel Maturi reiterated the Big Ten's support for a college football playoff in a Thursday article from The Star Tribune.

Maturi was outspoken about the Big Ten's support of a playoff last week, as well.

Thurday's article, written by Sid Hartman, says that much of the Big Ten Conference meeting last week in Chicago revolved around introducing a football playoff akin to those of other NCAA sports.

From the article:

Maturi is in favor of selecting a national champion in football through a playoff system, and said the Big Ten is moving in that direction. But according to Maturi, the Big Ten and Pac-12 also want to maintain their Rose Bowl relationship.

"I think the majority of Big Ten athletic directors favor a four-team playoff, two semifinal games followed by a championship game," he said. "I think we'd like to be inclusive of the bowl system, the bowl system has been very good to college football. I think we want to continue to have the regular season be important and no regular season is more important to any sport than college football."

According to the article, Big Ten commissioner Jim Delaney has been negotiating TV contracts with various networks.

Maturi's tenure as Minnesota AD will end June 18, when his resignation takes effect.
