NBA Trade Rumors: Wolves Looking At Acquiring Steve Nash From The Suns?

The biggest NBA trade rumors surrounding the Minnesota Timberwolves this past week have involved sending Corey Brewer away in some sort of package that would net Anthony Randolph from the Knicks as part of a three-team Carmelo Anthony trade, but Minnesota is now reportedly looking into being a much bigger part of a trade by acquiring point guard Steve Nash from the Phoenix Suns.

The Wolves, the one team in the NBA most would assume needs anything but a point guard considering their recent drafts, are said to be interested in the point guard as a mentor to Ricky Rubio according to ESPN’s Marc Stein.

The Wolves, sources say, have called Phoenix as much as anyone, despite that they’re well aware Nash has only one year left on his contract after this season and have to presume he’d have little interest in a long-term stay in Minnesota.

[…]

Have to applaud Minnesota for its ambition, though. I’ve likewise heard, despite all the factors listed here that make us question why the Wolves would even bother chasing Nash, they have not offered Rubio to the Suns for a different reason. In the Wolves’ Nash fantasy, I’m told, they dream of constructing a multi-team deal that brings Nash to Sota as a mentor for Rubio.

Is acquiring Nash for one season of grooming Rubio, a player who has been compared to the face of Phoenix in the past, worth it? I guess it probably depends what sort of package the Wolves would have to give up.

Either way, at least it seems like Minnesota is working to get better.
