Minnesota Twins Outfielder Ben Revere Sent To Triple-A Rochester

To make room for newly-acquired outfielder Clete Thomas, who was claimed by the Twins on waivers this weekend, Minnesota optioned its 23-year-old speedster Ben Revere to Triple-A Rochester on Saturday.

With Thomas assuming the role of the team's No. 4 outfielder going forward, Revere became expendable in a crowded battle for time at the position. Twins GM Terry Ryan spoke highly of Revere's game and potential, but acknowledged that it didn't benefit his player's growth to play sparingly. "We saw a good player, no doubt, but it's also part of the equation that you can't let a guy like Revere sit on the bench," Ryan said.

Revere took the news well enough, knowing that he still has plenty of opportunities to get back to the bigs in the coming weeks. "I won't be down there on the bench," Revere said after hearing the news. "So it's fine with me."

Clete Thomas Claimed Off Waivers By Minnesota Twins

Clete Thomas was designated for assignment by the Detroit Tigers earlier this week to make room on their roster for Drew Smyly, giving the Tigers 10 days to either place him back on the 40-man roster, place him on waivers, trade him or release him outright. The Tigers placed Thomas on waivers and he has been claimed by their Central Division rival Minnesota Twins, according to Detroit Tigers beat writer Jason Beck.

Thomas, 28, could never find a way to consistently crack the Tigers' crowded outfield since making his MLB debut in 2008. In three seasons with the Tigers, he received 443 plate appearances and had a hitting line of .253/.336/.728. Thomas has a strong arm and some speed on the base paths.

Twins head coach Ron Gardenhire has said that he has always like Thomas.
