Carl Pavano Injury: Twins Starter Shut Down For Season

Pitcher Carl Pavano was diagnosed with a bruised humerus bone on Tuesday, an injury that will shut down the Minnesota Twins starter for the rest of season. The right-hander's shoulder pain had bothered him since spring training; he had not made a start for the Twins since June 1, 2012, and had been on the disabled list since June 4.

Pavano is not happy about how this season has gone, for him or the Twins:

"The good news is, it doesn't require surgery," Pavano said. "I've had this in the past and gotten through it, and obviously I've pitched a lot since then. But as far as I'm concerned, this whole season has been a failure on many levels, for myself, for the team. It's just kind of lousy that it took this long.

Pavano, 36, is a free agent next season. He is in the final year of a two-year contact worth $16.5 million.

Carl Pavano Injury: Rehab Start Pushed Back For Twins Starter

Carl Pavano has missed a decent portion of the Minnesota Twins' season due to injury and, unfortunately, it seems there's no end in sight. The starting pitcher's most recent setback came over the weekend, derailing plans for him to start Tuesday night's game for Class-A Fort Myers.

Pavano was scheduled to throw about 60 pitches in four innings for the Twins' minor league affiliate, but the Pioneer Press reports that he has instead decided to head to New York to visit his doctor due to recent complications with his velocity.

Carl Pavano had his latest rehab start pushed back so he can visit orthopedic specialist Dr. David Altchek in New York. He was scheduled to throw four innings and about 60 pitches for Class A Fort Myers on Tuesday, Aug. 21.

"He just wants to make sure there's nothing in there that's inhibiting him," Antony said.

Pavano was originally placed on the injured list June 4 due to an anterior capsular strain in his shoulder.

Carl Pavano Injury: Twins Pitcher Throws Pain-Free 1st Bullpen Session

Hopeful to get back on the field with his teammates soon, Minnesota Twins pitcher Carl Pavano took the mound for a bullpen session on Sunday to continue rehab on his injured shoulder. Twins general manager Terry Ryan told MLB.com's Rhett Bollinger that the veteran pitcher's first session went fine with no reported problems:

While there remains a very viable concern that Pavano's time on the disabled list will not have helped his shoulder situation, it's at least comforting that he did not report any soreness whatsoever considering how setbacks have become a norm for the veteran right-hander as of late. Saturday, August 4 will mark the two month point from when Pavano was originally placed on the disabled list, even though it remains unclear just how much longer he'll be out.

Carl Pavano Injury: Twins Pitcher Hopes To Throw Off Mound Sunday

On the disabled list since June 4, injured Minnesota Twins pitcher Carl Pavano continues to remain weeks from returning to the rotation, but is scheduled to take part in a pair of long-toss sessions later this week. And according to the Pioneer Press' Ben Goessling, the veteran pitcher could starting working from a mound later in the weekend if he is pain-free:

The 36-year-old right-hander labored through 63 innings before his shoulder forced him to the sidelines more than a month ago, and it's hard to imagine he'll be able to return to the mound and just effortlessly start to whittle down his massive 6.00 ERA.

While Pavano has been on the shelf, the Twins have wasted little time ushering in a new era of their rotation as a number of new faces have taken on predominant roles. Though he is a proven arm and clearly commands a larger contract than some of his potential competitors, Pavano will still need to prove that he's fully over his shoulder problems if he wants to make an impact again this season.

The rehab process continues for injured Minnesota Twins pitcher Carl Pavano, as the 36-year-old hurler will next begin a throwing program this week to test the progress of the sore shoulder that initially forced him to the disabled list.

Pavano last made a start on June 1 against Cleveland, and was placed on the DL three days later in obvious discomfort. Despite a 6.00 ERA and 2-5 record on the season, he remains an integral piece of the Twins' starting rotation as a dependable innings-eater.

But while Pavano's upcoming throwing program is a clear step in the right direction, the organization still does not expect him back for a while. Bringing him along as slowly as possible to avoid re-injuring his shoulder seems like the wisest move for manager Ron Gardenhire's club.

Carl Pavano Injury: Twins Starter Still Not Throwing, Won't For A While

Minnesota Twins pitcher Carl Pavano has been on the disabled list since June 4 but should have a chance to return to the team soon as a nagging injury starts to heal.

According to an article by Twincities.com, the pitcher is still not throwing any practice pitches but has been able to start the road to recovery. He won't be throwing any time soon as his 36 year old arm continues to recover from soreness that has plagued him all season long. Eventually he will start rehab assignments en route to hopefully being a mainstay in the rotation once again, but right now the organization knows it will take a while:

"You're almost starting from scratch," general manager Terry Ryan said. "It's going to be awhile. But he's also a veteran and knows how to get prepared and all that good stuff. He's already been on the DL for about 10 days or so, and he hasn't thrown a ball yet. It's going to be some time before we even think about sending him out for a rehab (assignment). So he'll be out for a while."

Pavano was 2-5 with a 6.00 ERA on the season when he was finally put on the disabled list early in the month.

Carl Pavano Injury: Twins Pitcher Placed On DL; Nick Blackburn Reinstated

On Monday afternoon, the Minnesota Twins officially announced via the team's twitter account that struggling pitcher Carl Pavano will be placed on the disabled list with a right anterior capsular strain. At the same time, the team has reinstated Nick Blackburn from his rehab assignment and removed him from the disabled list, which he has been on since May 17 with a strained left quadriceps muscle.

Pavano has been battling arm issues for the majority of the season beginning with an inflamed shoulder that was first reported on May 13. According to Twins' manager Ron Gardenhire, he thinks the move will benefit Pavano so that he can rest up and pull himself together. With a 6.00 ERA through 11 starts this season, Pavano might need a mental break almost as much as a physical one.

Unable to make it out of the fifth inning in each of his last two starts, ice cold Minnesota Twins pitcher Carl Pavano looks to have a trip to the 15-day disabled list in his immediate future according to manager Ron Gardenhire

Clearly flustered by his veteran pitcher's inability to bounce back from what started as an inflamed shoulder, 1500ESPN.com's Tom Pelissero noted that Gardenhire plans to give Pavano an extended rest period, and would likely use spot-starter Jeff Manship to round out the rotation in his absence.

With a 6.00 ERA through 11 starts this season, Pavano might need a mental break almost as much as a physical one at this point. He has already mentioned how he felt 'fantastic' after receiving cortisone shots before, but the results on the field just haven't matched up. Regardless of how Manship performs in an extended role, the Twins remain hopeful that Pavano can use his break from game action to get back on track and rejoin the rotation.

Carl Pavano Injury: MRI Scheduled For Ailing Twins Starter

Minnesota Twins right-hander Carl Pavano will have his ailing right shoulder examined as the team tries to plan the best course of treatment to get Pavano back on the mound with a healthy arm.

After giving up six earned runs in less than four innings to the Cleveland Indians on Friday, Pavano expressed frustration about dealing with his sore shoulder and admitted it was time to take care of the problems. Just what the problem is though remains an issue. According to this report, Pavano will have an MRI to see if anything has changed with the shoulder.

"We've done everything that will usually get you over the hump, and nothing really has," Pavano said Saturday, June 2, after the team announced he will fly back to the Twin Cities on Sunday to be examined by team physician Dr. Dan Buss. He also will have a second MRI exam on the shoulder, which has bothered him since spring training.

Pavano does not want to go on the disabled list but he will likely miss his next scheduled start in Kansas City this week. A trip to the DL may be the best course of action for both Pavano and the team if extended rest is required.

Carl Pavano Injury: More Questions Than Answers For Minnesota Twins Starter

Minnesota Twins veteran right-hander Carl Pavano struggled again on the mound Friday night, giving up six earned runs in less than four innings to the Cleveland Indians to take the loss. Pavano is now 2-5 on the season with a 6.00 ERA, but an ailing right shoulder has made things worse of late.

Pavano is 0-3 in his last five starts, failing to get past the fifth inning in the last two while giving up six earned runs in both outings. According to this report by John Shipley, Pavano may need to shut it down for awhile to address the weakness and soreness in his shoulder while trying to bring his arm back to life.

Pavano said he's not inclined to get a cortisone shot in his ailing shoulder -- "There was a time," he said, "but if you're dealing with a weakness, it's not necessarily the answer." -- so rest seems to be the obvious course. The only Twins starter to pitch at least 200 innings the past two seasons, Pavano has thrown as many as 80 only once in his past six starts.

Pitching health has already altered the Twins' season so far as they have used nine different starters filling in for various injuries to Francisco Liriano and Nick Blackburn.

Despite posting six innings of two-run ball in Saturday's extra-inning victory over Milwaukee, Minnesota Twins starter Carl Pavano is still being monitored by team doctors after shoulder soreness forced him to get an MRI last week.

Before committing to placing Pavano fully back into the rotation, MLB.com's Rhett Bollinger reported that the Twins will reevaluate their pitcher on Tuesday to determine if he'll need a rest day or two.

Pavano threw just 86 pitches in Saturday's game, but appears to be fine after reportedly claiming to be 'fantastic' leading up to the start. If team officials determine that he's able to go on Thursday, Pavano will face the White Sox on the South Side. If not, then it's expected that he'll take on a potent Detroit Tigers lineup at some point during the three-game weekend series.

Carl Pavano Injury Update: Twins Pitcher Is 'Feeling Fantastic', Might Not Need Cortisone Shot

Carl Pavano was forced to get an MRI before his last start against the Cleveland Indians because of lowered fastball velocity among other problems this season which have boosted his ERA to a miserable 5.14. It revealed only minor inflammation of his shoulder and he made the start, but was as ineffective as ever in only 72 pitches where he allowed four runs on six hits.

After being forced to miss the Twins' latest series against the Detroit Tigers he even looked for a second opinion on that MRI, and was planning for a cortisone shot. Fortunately, it looks like Pavano is feeling better and might not need to resort to cortisone after a good week of work, according to a tweet by Phil Mackey of 1500ESPN.

Any good news for Pavano right now is great, after such a terrible year so far, any improvement for their usually solid veteran will be of help to the recently lowly Twins in the future.

Carl Pavano Injury Update: Twins Pitcher Will Not Make Road Trip To Detroit

Despite being on the mound for his scheduled start on Monday against the Cleveland Indians, Minnesota Twins hurler Carl Pavano is not planning to travel with the team on its upcoming road trip to Detroit. Pavano told the Pioneer Press that he plans to seek a second opinion on his MRI results from this past week.

The veteran righthander is expected to speak with New York orthopedist Dr. David Altchek, the same doctor who performed his '07 Tommy John surgery, at some point later in the week to confirm the depth of his shoulder injury.

"He's a doctor I have respect for and I trust, same as with our doctor, but that's what the second opinion is for," Pavano said. "I have a little more of a personal relationship with him just because of my past with him. It's just an opportunity for him to give me an opinion. It could very much be the same opinion as the team doctor; a lot of the time, that's the way it works out."

Pavano tossed six innings in Monday's loss to the Indians, scattering six hits with three strikeouts. He yielded four earned runs for the fifth time this year during the start and raised his ERA to 5.14, but only threw 72 pitches as a precautionary measure and still might not be mechanically sound amidst the injury.
