On Monday afternoon, the Minnesota Twins officially announced that right-handed pitcher Jason Marquis had cleared release waivers and was free to sign with any other team of his choosing. Marquis signed a one-year, $3 million contract this offseason and failed to live up to expectations finishing with a 2-4 record and 8.47 ERA in seven starts as a member of the team.
Minnesota will still be on the hook for the money they owe Marquis regardless of where he ends up, which left some to question whether the team would bring him back to pitch at Triple-A to work out his issues. Twins general manager Terry Ryan quickly put that idea to rest. His comments via TwinCities.com:
"I think we're going to move on," the GM said. "I suspect that probably would be a mutual feeling. He doesn't need to be pitching at Triple-A; he's beyond that. He may end up signing with another club who might put him at Triple-A and get him stretched out and acclimated. I don't think that's what we should do."

After having a respectable season in the National League a year ago -- mostly for the Washington Nationals, where he was 8-6 with a 3.95 ERA -- Jason Marquis was a huge disappointment for the Minnesota Twins.
A loser in his last four starts, giving up 20 earned runs in 16-plus innings, Marquis was designated for assignment, giving the Twins 10 days to decide what to do with Marquis.
They've since made that decision:
The #Twins have placed Jason Marquis on release waivers. If he isn't claimed within 48 hours he'll become a free agent.

It's unlikely that Marquis will be claimed off waivers, but it's possible that he winds up back in the National League where he has a bit of a track record pitching for the Braves, Cardinals, Cubs, Rockies, Nationals and Diamondbacks.
The Twins had signed Marquis to a one-year, $3.6 million deal in the offseason.

The Minnesota Twins will select the contract of right-handed pitcher Cole DeVries, according to the Minnesota Twins' Twitter feed.
DeVries was hardly tearing it up in Rochester. The 27-year-old had a 4.24 ERA in eight starts and a 1-4 record.
Then again, it was getting harder and harder to justify have Marquis in the rotation. The 33-year-old Marquis had a 8.47 ERA this season and had lost four straight starts. His last start may have been the nail in the coffin. He went 1.2 innings and gave up eight earned runs.
The Twins have the worst ERA in the majors at 5.43.
"Select the contract" is like being recalled, but applies to players who are not already on a club's 40-man roster.

With the Minnesota rotation already coming apart at the seams, if Carl Pavano needs to miss a start they'll need to find at least one starter who can step in and fill the void.
