Despite another promising start from left-handed pitcher Scott Diamond, the Minnesota Twins couldn't find a way to sneak past the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday in a 3-2 series-ending loss.
The 26-year-old Diamond scattered eight hits over 7.1 innings of three-run ball to give his team a chance, but was struck on the leg by a line drive in the eighth inning that not only scored the decisive run but also forced him to the locker room after 93 pitches. Though the 6-foot-3 Canadian-born hurler appeared to have avoided a serious injury, he ended up taking the loss to fall to 9-5 on the season and will continue to be evaluated by team doctors.
A legitimate spark plug as of late for Ron Gardenhire, Twins outfielder Ben Revere extended his hitting streak to a career-high 15 games in the opening inning, and put forth a 2-for-4 performance that also included his 25th stolen base of the year. Revere is now hitting a stellar .319 in his sophomore campaign and has raised his on-base percentage by more than 40 points from last season.
Unable to mount a late comeback with runners in scoring position against Chicago starter Jake Peavy, who went eight extremely strong innings with eight strikeouts to move to 9-7 on the year, the Twins will now be forced to play a four-game series away from home against the Boston Red Sox that begins Thursday.

Francisco Liriano's return to Minnesota right after being traded provided the Chicago White Sox with a win in their second game against the Minnesota Twins. Minnesota will look to pounce right back in game three as the two teams both seek a win in the series -- though with the Sox barely scraping the top of the AL Central the victory would likely be a bit more important to them.
A solid pitching match-up between two of the best pitchers on the two teams will face off in the rubber match. Scott Diamond (9-4, 2.88 ERA) will take the mound for the Twins, facing off against Jake Peavy (8-7, 3.15 ERA) of the White Sox. Peavy won his last game against the Twins, while Diamond is coming off of a three hitter against the Cleveland Indians, so both pitchers are in top form heading into the game.
The game will be at Target Field at 1:10 p.m. ET.

Minnesota Twins pitcher Nick Blackburn gave up just two runs in eight innings on the mound but had to watch reliever Jeff Gray (5-1) take the ball in the top of the ninth and promptly give up a two-run home run to Chicago White Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski.
The homer broke a 2-2 tie and fueled Chicago's 4-3 win which snapped Minnesota's four-game winning streak. The Twins rallied in the bottom of the ninth as Denard Span, no longer the topic of trade rumors, capped off a big night with a run-scoring single. Span was 4 for 5 at the plate for the game.
Former Twins' left-hander Francisco Liriano looked sharp in his first start for the White Sox since being traded over the weekend. Liriano struck out eight of his former teammates in six innings while giving up four hits and two runs. Blackburn was equally effective through eight innings, giving up just five hits and two runs with just one walk.
Chicago reliever Matt Thornton (3-6) earned the win for the White Sox while Addison Reed held on to close out the game and earn his 17th save of the season.

On Tuesday, the Minnesota Twins will play the second game of a three-game set against the Chicago White Sox at Target Field.
After taking the first game of the set, the Twins will look to extend their current winning streak to five games, which started with a sweep of the Cleveland Indians. The Twins have scored five or more runs in each game over the course of the streak and a total of 35 runs have been scored over that four game span.
The projected starters for Tuesday are Nick Blackburn for the Twins (4-6, 7.99 ERA) and former Twin, Francisco Liriano (3-10, 5.31 ERA) who will be making his White Sox debut after being traded by Minnesota on July 28.

Minnesota Twins center fielder Denard Span went out with a bang -- if, that is, he is actually going out.
Span has been the subject of trade rumors for the past few weeks. The 28-year-old is hitting .290 with a .356 on-base percentage on the season. He may have increased his trade value by hitting .438 in his last eight games.
But it was more than his bat that made an impression on Monday. Span had a leaping catch in the fifth that robbed what looked to be a potential two-run, go-ahead homer by Alex Rios. He received a standing ovation for his efforts. As an encore, he made a sliding catch on a would-be base hit by A.J. Pierzynski in the seventh.
The Twins are reportedly asking a lot for Span, so it's far from certain that he'll be traded. But after Monday night's game, he told reporters that, if a trade does go through, he wanted his last game as a Twin to be memorable.
From ESPN1500.com:
"I told myself tonight, if this is my last game (in a Twins uniform), I want to go out and have fun, and go out in style," Span said. "It was a lot of fun. We'll see what happens."
[...]
Asked about Tuesday's 3 p.m. trade deadline, Span said, "It's on my mind."
Span was the subject of trade rumors last season, as well. There was speculation that the Twins might send Span to the Washington Nationals, but that deal never materialized.

The Minnesota Twins won the first game of their three game series against the Chicago White Sox 7-6 on Monday night. A sac fly from Jamey Carroll won them the game.
The win extends the Twins' win streak to four games after sweeping the Indians in a three-game set at home. It's also a measure of revenge, as Minnesota lost three in Chicago last week.
It was a high-scoring first inning, with the Sox jumping out to a 4-0 lead off of a Paul Konerko RBI-single and a three-run home run from A.J. Pierzynski. The Twins tied it in the bottom of the first with RBI singles from Joe Mauer, Josh Willingham and Danny Valencia and Mauer scoring on a fielder's choice.
The Twins made it 6-4 in the third inning after Ryan Doumit hit an RBI-single and a sac fly from Valencia.
Alejandro De Aza had RBI-singles in the fourth and eighth innings to tie the game at 6-6 before Carroll's sac fly ended it.
It's the fourth walk-off win of the season for Minnesota, via Joe Christensen of the Star Tribune.
The Twins pulled starter Cole De Vries after five innings. He gave up seven hits, five runs (four earned) and struck out three.
Reliever Glen Perkins (2-1) got the win for his one inning of work in the ninth. Brett Myers (0-1) pitched only the ninth for Chicago and came away with the loss.
Jose Quintana pitched seven innings for Chicago, giving up 10 hits, six runs (four earned) and striking out none.
Game 2 is scheduled for 8:10 p.m. ET Tuesday at Target Field.
