Twins Move Minor League Team To Cedar Rapids

Last week's reports that the Minnesota Twins were looking at the Cedar Rapids Kernels as their new Class A affiliate proved correct. The Twins will announce Wednesday that they will make the Iowa squad their new Midwest League partner.

The move ends an eight-year relationship between Minnesota and the Beloit (Wis.) Snappers, another Midwest League team. The Snappers' Pohlman Field seats about 2,500; the Kernels, who were a Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim affiliate for the last two decades, play at Perfect Game Field, a facility that seats around 5,300.

Cedar Rapids is 93 miles closer to Minneapolis than Beloit. The Snappers are expected to have a new affiliate when minor league play begins in 2013; the Kernels open up the season at Beloit.

Twins Minor League Affiliate Could Still End Up In Iowa

The Minnesota Twins and their Class-A affiliate, the Beloit (Wis.) Snapper, have not agreed to a new deal as of Monday. Reports on Thursday indicated that the Twins could be looking to shift their affiliation from Beloit to a team in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and the Pioneer Press updates that situation on Monday:

It still looks as if the Twins could end up moving their Class A affiliate from Beloit, Wis., to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, if they can't agree on a new deal soon. Cedar Rapids, which had the Los Angeles Angels as an affiliate this year, opens its 2013 season against Beloit on April 4.

While April 4 may seem like a ways off, these things need to be set in stone far in advance of that date. Teams need time to get everything in order, and that requires months of work and organization. As noted, Cedar Rapids was an affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels this past season, but the deal expired on Sunday, which means the Twins are allowed to talk to them at this point.

The original report from ESPN stated an announcement could come as early as Sept. 20, and though there's been no follow-up from them, the confirmation that it remains a possibility from the Pioneer Press means that date is still a possibility.
