Vikings Defeat Seahawks In Pre-Season Action, 20-7

If Tarvaris Jackson and Sidney Rice are going to get revenge on the Minnesota Vikings, it's going to have to come at another time.

The Minnesota Vikings defeated the Seattle Seahawks in pre-season action on Saturday night by a final score of 20-7. The first score for the night was actually generated by the Minnesota defense, as Jackson threw a pass that was intended for Golden Tate that went through his hands and into the hands of former Golden Gopher and current Vikings defensive back Marcus Sherels. Sherels knew what to do with it after he caught it, and took the ball 64 yards for a score. It was the Vikings' first touchdown of the 2011 pre-season, and gave them a 7-0 lead.

A couple of Ryan Longwell field goals gave Minnesota a 13-0 lead going into halftime and, after a scoreless third quarter, the Seahawks got on the board in the fourth thanks to the right arm of Charlie Whitehurst. Whitehurst led a huge 16-play, 89-yard drive for the Seahawks, taking over eight and a half minutes to do so. The drive concluded with a 3-yard touchdown pass from Whitehurst to tight end Anthony McCoy, and cut the Minnesota lead to 13-7.

After the Vikings stopped the Seahawks on a fourth down in their own territory late in the game, the Vikings sealed the game with their first offensive touchdown of the 2011 pre-season, a 35-yard touchdown run from rookie running back Tristan Davis to give themselves a 20-7 lead. Seahawks' third-string quarterback Josh Portis tried to get Seattle closer as the clock wound down, but Adrian Awasom sacked Portis to end the game and even the pre-season records for both teams at 1-1.

Minnesota's next pre-season game will see them play at the Metrodome for the first time since the roof collapsed due to heavy snow last December 12. They will host the Dallas Cowboys on Saturday, August 27, with kickoff scheduled for 7:00 PM Central time.

Vikings Lead Seahawks 13-0 At Halftime

Thanks to a great deal of sloppiness by the Seattle Seahawks defense, the Minnesota Vikings added another field goal to take a 13-0 lead into the locker room at halftime of the second pre-season game of the year for both teams.

Christian Ponder took over at quarterback for the Vikings after a Ryan Longwell field goal put the Vikings ahead 10-0, and led a decent drive that started at the Vikings' 37-yard line. He made one particularly nice play, as he scrambled to his right to avoid the rush on a 3rd-and-4 play and hit Juaquin Iglesias running through the zone for a 19-yard gain and a first down for Minnesota.

The Vikings then got 20 more yards without doing a whole lot, thanks to a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on Seahawks' linebacker Aaron Curry and an offsides penalty on defensive end Raheem Brock. The Vikings' drive stalled at that point, however, and they had to settle for a second Ryan Longwell field goal, this one from 34 yards out to give the Vikings a 13-0 lead.

We will continue our coverage of this one into the second half, ladies and gentlemen. We hope that you'll stay awake with us until this one is over!

Vikings At Seahawks: Minnesota Adds Field Goal After Goal Line Stand

The Minnesota Vikings stopped the Seattle Seahawks at the goal line, and they turned it into their best drive of the pre-season to extend their lead to 10-0 in the Pacific Northwest.

The Seahawks found themselves with first and goal on the 2-yard line, but were unable to bust into the end zone on four successive tries. The Vikings then took over at their own 1-yard line and moved the ball 81 yards in 13 plays. The highlights of the drive were a 26-yard catch and run by Jim Kleinsasser. . .yes, THAT Jim Kleinsasser. . .and a 21-yard dart to newly acquired receiver Michael Jenkins.

Minnesota moved the ball down to the Seattle 13-yard line on the drive, but a false start on right tackle Phil Loadholt killed the offensive momentum, and forced the Vikings to settle for a 36-yard field goal from Ryan Longwell to give themselves a 10-0 lead.

The Seahawks have just taken the ball back with 6:33 left in the first half of play. We will continue to have updates for you here as the action warrants.

Vikings at Seahawks: Sherels Gives Vikings 7-0 Lead

The Minnesota Vikings got a bit of a boost in their first pre-season game from the only native Minnesotan on the team at this point in time, as Marcus Sherels' 64-yard interception return gave the Vikings their first touchdown of the 2011 pre-season, and a 7-0 lead over Seattle.

It was a bit of redemption for Sherels, who had handed the ball back to Seattle with a fumble on a punt return on the previous series. Seahawks quarterback Tarvaris Jackson. . .man, it feels nice to type that. . .attempted to hit second-year man Golden Tate on a pass, but the ball went through his hands and directly to Sherels, who turned on the jets and put the ball in the end zone for Minnesota.

The Vikings are driving again as we approach the midway point of the second quarter, as they lead the Seahawks already by a score of 7-0.
