Minnesota Vikings Announce 53-Man Roster; Claim Adibi From Texans

The Minnesota Vikings announced their 53-man roster for the 2011 NFL season yesterday, and they've already made a change to it.

Here is the list of players who made the big show for the Vikings.

QB: Donovan McNabb, Christian Ponder, Joe Webb

RB: Adrian Peterson, Toby Gerhart, Lorenzo Booker

WR: Percy Harvin, Bernard Berrian, Michael Jenkins, Greg Camarillo, Devin Aromashodu

TE: Visanthe Shiancoe, Jim Kleinsasser, Kyle Rudolph, Allan Reisner

OL: Charlie Johnson, Steve Hutchinson, John Sullivan, Anthony Herrera, Phil Loadholt, Jon Cooper, DeMarcus Love, Pat Brown, Seth Olsen and Brandon Fusco

DL: Jared Allen, Kevin Williams (suspended Weeks 1-2), Remi Ayodele, Brian Robison, Everson Griffen, Letroy Guion, Christian Ballard, Adrian Awasom, Fred Evans, D’Aundre Reed

LB: E.J. Henderson, Chad Greenway, Erin Henderson, Kenny Onatolu and Larry Dean

CB: Antoine Winfield, Cedric Griffin, Chris Cook, Asher Allen, Brandon Burton, Marcus Sherels

S: Husain Abdullah, Tyrell Johnson, Jamarca Sanford, Eric Frampton, Mistral Raymond

Specialists: LS Cullen Loeffler, P Chris Kluwe, K Ryan Longwell

On Sunday morning, the Vikings made another move, claiming linebacker Xavier Adibi off of waivers from the Houston Texans. Adibi, the Texans' fourth-round pick in the 2008 NFL Draft out of Virginia Tech, had played 34 games in the NFL in his three years in Houston. He has played as an inside linebacker in a 3-4 scheme in both college and the pros, so it remains to be seen where the team is going to try to use him.

No word has been sent out yet as to who the Vikings will release to make room for Adibi.

Vikings Announce Roster Cuts

Earlier today, the Minnesota Vikings announced roster cuts to get to the NFL mandated level of 80 players. They are:

DB Chris Adingupu
OL Conan Amituanai
TE Ed Barham
QB Rhett Bomar
DB Simeon Castille
LB Jonathan Gilmore
WR Andre Holmes
LB Kyle O’Donnell
K Nate Whitaker
DT Colby Whitlock

There are no surprises at all on this list, but it’s just the first set of cuts. QB Rhett Bomar, acquired in the trade last year that sent QB Sage Rosenfels and RB Darius Reynaud to the Giants, hadn’t played in the pre-season and got a DUI on the Vikes only day off in training camp. K Nate Whitaker had only had one kickoff, and DT Coly Whitlock was a late signing and had virtually no opportunity to make an impression.

The next will come on Sunday, when teams must get down to the final roster size of 53, and that’s the cutdown day where we usually see some surprises.

Vikings Have Ups And Downs In 23-17 Loss To Cowboys

As is typical of NFL pre-season action, the Minnesota Vikings showed some reasons for optimism on Saturday night when they hosted the Dallas Cowboys. They also showed a few reasons for concern, and the result was a 23-17 loss to the Cowboys in the first event held at the Metrodome since the roof collapsed back on December 12.

For the better part of the first half, the Vikings controlled the line of scrimmage against Dallas' first-string. Adrian Peterson looked. . .well, like Adrian Peterson, putting up 81 yards on 14 carries. Peterson's running directly set up the Vikings' first touchdown, as Donovan McNabb executed a perfect play-action fake to Peterson and hit a streaking Bernard Berrian for a 49-yard touchdown pass to give Minnesota an early 7-0 lead. The Cowboys would come back in the second quarter with a pair of touchdowns, one coming off of the return of a blocked Ryan Longwell field goal attempt. Longwell connected on a field goal before the end of the first half, and the Cowboys were able to take a 17-10 lead into the locker room.

The Vikings got a pretty good scare late in the first quarter of play. Cowboys' quarterback Tony Romo hit tight end Jason Witten on a pass in the right flat, and cornerback Antoine Winfield came up and put a textbook tackle on Witten to hold him to a very short gain. However, Winfield remained down after the play was over, and it appeared as though one of the players the Vikings could most ill-afford to lose had injured his left shoulder. Fortunately, it turned out to be nothing more than a stinger, as Winfield was shown laughing with teammates on the sidelines shortly after the incident, allowing defensive coordinator Fred Pagac and the rest of Vikings nation to breathe a little bit easier.

Not everything was great for the Vikings. . .McNabb had a pass intercepted by Dallas safety Gerald Sensabaugh on a deflection in the second quarter, and the Vikings did allow Romo to complete 75% of his passes. Overall, however, the Vikings fared well against the Cowboys. Bill Musgrave's new offense had a great deal of success, with McNabb completing nine passes to his wide receivers, including the long touchdown to Berrian.

The Vikings' final pre-season game will happen on Thursday night at the Metrodome, as they will play host to the Houston Texans. None of the starters will see any really significant action, and word is circulating that rookie Christian Ponder, who saw very little time in the game against Dallas, could start the game on Thursday night. From there, it will be on to San Diego and the start of the 2011 NFL regular season.
