Minnesota Vikings kicker Ryan Longwell was released by the team on Monday afternoon. Is this the end of his time in the NFC North?

Ryan Longwell seemed to excel since moving from the Green Bay Packers to the Minnesota Vikings, but his time in the NFC North looks like it may have come to a close. The Vikings kicker was handed his walking papers on Monday afternoon, apparently, and it was reportedly not a mutual decision.

The Vikings have yet to officially announce the move, but the kicker mentioned it on his Twitter account.

Longwell was expected to have competition in training camp, but as the Daily Norseman notes, that will no longer be an issue.

The Vikings did draft a kicker in the sixth round of the 2012 NFL Draft in Georgia's Blair Walsh, but the indications had been that the team was going to have a kicking competition between Walsh and Longwell during camps and things of that nature. However, that competition just got a whole lot more one-sided.
