Vikings Receivers Stepped Up In Last Big Opportunity

When the Minnesota Vikings selected wide receiver Jarius Wright in the fourth-round of the 2012 NFL Draft back in April, they expected that the former Arkansas WR would produce some big plays in the NFL. On Thursday night in the team's preseason finale against the Houston Texans, Wright flashed his explosive potential and led all wide receivers with six receptions for 122 yards and a touchdown. His best play came early in the third quarter, when he snatched a throw from McLeod Bethel-Thompson and scampered into the end zone for a 59-yard touchdown. After the game, Wright talked about that highlight moment (via 1500ESPN.com):

"I really couldn't tell you what coverage they was in, just for the simple fact of I think the corner and safety got confused," Wright said. "It looked like a Cover-2 look, but the corner didn't try to get his hands on me and the safety never moved outside. Just ran straight down the field and my quarterback put the ball on the money."

Wright will be insulated from the roster cuts that are set to go down on Friday, and perhaps Minnesota has found another dynamic receiver to add to the mix for 2012 and beyond.

Devin Aromashodu also played well on Thursday. He produced 89 yards and a touchdown on five catches, including a 58-yard TD catch during the second quarter on a pass from Sage Rosenfels. All in all, it was a strong day for the Vikings receivers that have hopes of making an impact during the regular season.

Fan Fell To His Death During Preseason Game Between Vikings And Texans

On Thursday night during the preseason finale between the Minnesota Vikings and the Houston Texans, a 25-year-old fan tragically died after falling off a fifth-floor escalator and landing on the ground floor at Reliant Stadium. Houston Police Department spokesman John Cannon told the AP that the circumstances of the fall were still under investigation but that they consider the death accidental. The man will not be identified until the family is informed. According to the AP story, the man was transported to the Memorial Hermann Hospital after the fall, but he passed away in the emergency room.

The SB Nation Minnesota staff extends their heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the victim during this difficult time.

Vikings Injury Update: Adrian Peterson Likely A 'Game-Time Decision' For Week 1

The Minnesota Vikings played their final preseason game on Thursday night against Houston Texans, and the good news is that the team escaped without sustaining any major injuries. In fact, they got some fairly good news on Adrian Peterson as well, as the star running back is still in play to start the season opener. As for injuries from the finale, Jarius Wright led all wide receivers on Thursday with six receptions for 122 yards and a TD and according to head coach Leslie Frazier he only suffered a left ankle sprain during the contest.

In bigger injury news, Frazier told reporters on Thursday night that Peterson will "probably be a game-time decision" for the regular season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars:

"I think he'll probably be a `game-time' decision," Frazier said of Peterson's likely availability for the opener against Jacksonville. "We've got a lot of things we want to get done with him this week, and I doubt that we would know without getting him through an entire week, if we thought he was ready to play a game."

The Vikings open the season on Sept. 9 at home against Jacksonville.

Vikings Vs. Texans Final Score: Minnesota Drops Preseason Finale, 28-24

The Minnesota Vikings wrapped up their 2012 preseason schedule on Thursday night against the Houston Texans. Houston emerged with the 28-24 victory. In the fourth preseason game, players are typically fighting for spots on the back end of NFL rosters, so the fact that the Vikings trailed for most of the contest doesn't really mean too much going forward.

On a high note, Minnesota produced 562 total yards of offense on Thursday night. Backup running back Jordan Todman rushed for 114 yards on 10 carries, including a 76 yard scamper for a touchdown in the fourth quarter. Sage Rosenfels looked strong behind center, completing 7-11 passes for 111 yards and one touchdown. Meanwhile, Joe Webb managed to post 47 passing yards on 4-7 passing and Jarius Wright led the way for receivers with six receptions for 122 yards and a TD.

On the other side of the ball, the Vikings did give up some big plays. John Beck and DeVier Posey connected for an 80-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter to put the Texans up 14-3 and preseason star Trindon Holliday pulled off an electric punt return for a 76-yard touchdown early in the third quarter. With the preseason behind them, the Vikings now need to make their final cuts and prepare for the rapidly approaching season opener.

Vikings Vs. Texas Halftime Score: Houston Leads 14-10

The Minnesota Vikings are trailing 14-10 to the Houston Texans through the first two quarters of their preseason finale on Thursday. With the vast majority of the starters sitting out for both teams in anticipation of the regular season, the reserve players are getting their final chance to impress coaches in a game environment.

Sage Rosenfels has looked strong against Houston's back-ups so far, completing 7-of-11 passes for 111 yards and one touchdown. Devin Aromashodu has been the big target of the night, snagging five passes for 89 yards and the team's only touchdown.

The two teams have played a pretty even game so far, as the Vikings have just three more total yards than the Texas on the night while neither team has committed a turnover. Both teams have been moving the ball with ease so far in the game, as they're on pace for over 500 total yards apiece.

NFL Rumors: Chris Summers Worked Out With Vikings

According to Tom Pelissero of ESPN Twin Cities, the Minnesota Vikings have worked out ex-Chicago Bears wide receiver Chris Summers. The team is looking for help at the wide receiver position for a number of reasons. Second-year quarterback Christian Ponder is enjoying targets like Percy Harvin, Kyle Rudolph and new addition John Carlson, not to mention the explosive Jerome Simpson, but the latter is set to miss the first three games of the season due to a suspension.

As such, Minnesota is looking for players like Devin Aromashodu, Stephen Burton, Jarius Wright and Emmanuel Arceneaux to step it up in his absence. Unfortunately, those aren't names that inspire a ton of confidence. Those guys will get a chance to show their worth in the fourth preseason game, as Harvin and other starters are set to get some rest, but they're still looking outside of the organization.

Summers is 23 years old and is a big, athletic target, which could be perfect for Ponder. He had 188 catches for 2,712 yards and 26 touchdowns in four seasons at Liberty. As the report notes, he also broke Simpson's Big South Conference record with 1,081 receiving yards in 2010.

Any signing likely wouldn't take part in Thursday's final preseason game for the Vikings.

Joe Webb Starting Vikings' Preseason Finale

The Minnesota Vikings will turn to Joe Webb to start Thursday's preseason finale against the Houston Texans on Thursday. Regular starter Christian Ponder is among the starters who have the night off, giving Webb a chance to shine.

Webb has gone 17-for-34 with 152 yards passing in the Vikings' three previous games and has added 73 yards on the ground. Webb will be used some during the regular season in what Vikings coaches are calling the "Blazer" package, but expect the Vikings to try to showcase Webb's ability in the pocket rather than his running game. Against the Chargers on Aug. 24, Webb went six of eight and didn't attempt a single called running play. The Vikings are hoping for a similar performance on Thursday.

Sage Rosenfels will serve as Webb's backup and see action in the second half.
