Greg Childs Injury: Vikings WR Placed On Waivers, Team Re-Signs A.J. Love

The Minnesota Vikings suffered a tough loss when rookie fourth-round draft pick Greg Childs went down with dual knee injuries. Childs tore the patellar tendon in both of his knees on Saturday while going up for a pass in the corner of the end zone. It's a season-ending injury, and particularly debilitating for Childs, given that he suffered a torn patellar tendon in his junior season in college as well.

Unfortunately, repeat injuries in this situation is not terribly uncommon, and this is a bad setback at the start of his career. The Vikings set things in motion to get Childs played on injured reserve on Monday, by placing him on injury waivers, according to Tom Pelissero of ESPN Twin Cities.

Injury waivers are a necessary first step to placing a player on injured reserve. It gives another team a chance to pick up the player and carry him on the roster until he's healthy, but it's unlikely to happen at this point, given that the injury is definitely season-ending, and there would be little-to-no chance of Childs coming back even in the playoffs.

To replace the young wide receiver, the Vikings have re-signed A.J. Love, another rookie wide receiver, who was recently waived for roster space. Childs is expected to have surgery this week, according to the report.
