Niners At Vikings Halftime Update: Minnesota Leads San Francisco 17-3

If you had dreamed up an idea first half for the Minnesota Vikings in their match-up against the San Francisco 49ers, it probably would have looked a lot like this.

The Vikings finished the first half with a 52-yard field goal from rookie Blair Walsh to make the score 17-3 in their favor going into the locker room. The rookie from Georgia is now the first kicker in the history of the Minnesota Vikings to connect on field goals of 50 yards or longer in three consecutive games.

The drive was set up by a great play by the Vikings' special teams. The Niners thought they had David Akers set up for a 43-yard field goal attempt, but the kick was blocked by Letroy Guion to keep the Niners tally at three. Christian Ponder then led the subsequent scoring drive for the Vikings, and they go into the locker room with a two-touchdown lead over a team that many thought was the NFL's best going into this weekend's action.

Christian Ponder has had a very good first half, connecting on 15-of-23 passes for 143 yards and a touchdown, and has thrown in a 23-yard rushing touchdown as well. The Vikings have also held the Niners to just 121 total yards through one half of play.

We're at halftime at the Metrodome, and the Minnesota Vikings are shocking the San Francisco 49ers by a score of 17-3.
