For a second there, it looked like the Minnesota Golden Gophers were going to stop the Nebraska Cornhuskers on their first drive of the day. However, a sack of Cornhuskers' quarterback Taylor Martinez was taken off of the board by an offsides penalty on the Gophers, and the Huskers took advantage of it.
After Martinez turned a 3rd-and-5 following the penalty into a first down, Rex Burkhead took the ball 19 yards down to the Gophers' 7-yard line. However, the Gopher defense stiffened up, thanks to a nice pass break-up on a fade route, and kept Nebraska out of the end zone. The Cornhuskers had to settle for a 21-yard field goal by Brett Maher, and they have taken a 3-0 lead with just over eight minutes remaining in the first quarter.
The Gophers did get the ball first in this one, but managed just one first down before having to punt the ball away to Nebraska.
With eight minutes left on the clock in the first quarter from TCF Bank Stadium, the Minnesota Golden Gophers trail the Nebraska Cornhuskers by a score of 3-0.
