Gophers Hockey: Jake Bischoff Verbally Commits To Minnesota

The University of Minnesota hockey team picked up another heralded recruit Thursday. According to Jason Groth of the Grand Rapids Herald-Review, junior defenseman Jake Bischoff made a verbal commitment to the Maroon and Gold.

Bischoff joins his father Grant, who played forward at Minnesota from 1988-1991, as a member of the Gophers. He is expected to join the team in either 2013 or 2014 after narrowing his choices down from Minnesota-Duluth and Notre Dame.

Last season the 6 foot defenseman scored 31 points in 27 games for Grand Rapids. He is the third player from the city to join the Gophers under Don Lucia (who grew up in Grand Rapids and an alum) after Alex Goligoski and Patrick White.

As one scout told me, Jake is "very mobile, very smart and poised. His top end speed needs work but he is one of the best [Minnesota] Elite League defensemen. "

Bischoff joins a list of recent University of Minnesota hockey recruits including Lou Nanne, Gabe Guertler and Vinni Letierri.
