Minnesota Twins Spring Training: Delmon Young Avoids Arbitration With One-Year Contract

I know there might still be some snow around, bust rest assured, Spring has arrived. Well, Spring Training at least. The Twins are starting to report to Fort Meyers to start getting ready for another shot at a World Series ring. The first thing they needed to get out of the way was to sign Delmon Young to a contract extension to avoid arbitration. According to Kelly Thesier of MLB.com, mission accomplished.

The Twins and outfielder Delmon Young have avoided arbitration, agreeing to a one-year, $5.375 million contract.

The salary is slightly under the midpoint of what the two sides sought in arbitration. Young had asked for $6.25 million, and the Twins filed for $4.65 million. The midpoint of those two figures was $5.45 million.

Young had a big season for the Twins last year, finally reaching the potential the organization saw in him when they traded Matt Garza for him before the 2008 season. Young hit .298 with 21 home runs and 112 rbis, helping to fill the void left by Justin Morneau over the second half of the season.

Another interesting storyline is the potential trade of starter Francisco Liriano, who is coming off his first really good season after Tommy John Surgery. You can follow all the updates about any potential Liriano trades in this StoryStream.
