Lost amidst the excitement of the Vikings' stadium announcement with Arden Hills on Tuesday afternoon is Zygi Wilf's mentioning that he wanted to attempt to bring Major League Soccer to Minneapolis with the new stadium when it gets completed. While it sounds like a good idea, there might be a few obstacles in the way of getting an MLS team into the new Minnesota stadium.
↵According to the folks from Inside Minnesota Soccer, Minnesota might have to wait in line if they want an MLS team. MLS will be expanding to Montreal for the 2012 season, and that will give the league 19 teams. From the sounds of things, there has been talk of a second team in New York as well as a team in the southeastern United States could potentially have dibs on a spot in the league before the city of Minneapolis could possibly be considered. It sounds as though Major League Soccer is hesitant to expand past 20 teams, which would be another obstacle to a potential MLS team in Minnesota.
↵So, while the idea of Real Minnesota or Minneapolis F.C. sounds like a good idea, it might be a bit more difficult than Zygi Wilf made it sound in his press conference on Tuesday.
