The Big Ten was shutout of the first BCS rankings of 2012; Alabama holds top spot

Jesse Johnson-US PRESSWIRE - Presswire

The first BCS rankings of the 2012 season have been released with no Big Ten teams making the list.

Michigan is ranked No. 23 in the AP poll with Northwestern, Nebraska, Penn State and Wisconsin all receiving votes, however all were held out of the BCS rankings. Neither Minnesota, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Purdue nor Michigan State received any votes in the AP poll.

Ohio State is 7-0 and ranked No. 7 in the AP poll, however, they are bowl ineligible this season due to NCAA sanctions.

The Alabama Crimson Tide hold the top spot in the rankings after defeating Missouri this past weekend. The Crimson Tide are 6-0 on the season and 3-0 in the SEC. They play Tennessee next Saturday. Following Alabama is the Florida Gators and Oregon Ducks. No. 2 Florida faces No. 7 South Carolina next week while No. 3 Oregon squares off with Arizona State. Kansas State and Notre Dame round out the top 5.

This week's rankings mark the 13th straight BCS poll in which an SEC team held the top spot.
