The top-ranked Minnesota Golden Gophers didn't quite live up to their lofty expectations this weekend at the 2012 Big Ten wrestling championships, but their showing was far from a failure. The team took second place to the Penn St. Nittany Lions as Tony Nelson and Kevin Steinhaus each won individual championships.
Nelson won the heavyweight championship as the 285-pound bracket's top seed, securing a 2-0 victory Bobby Telford of the Iowa Hawkeyes. Steinhaus also did what was expected as the top seed in his own bracket, defeating Nebraska Cornhuskers representative Josh Ihnen to claim a championship in the 184-pound championship.
Zach Sanders took second in the 125-pound division with a 6-1 loss, Logan Storley lost a major decision in his 174-pound championship battle against Ed Ruth of the Penn State Nittany Lions and Dylan Ness lost on a technical fall to Penn State's Frank Molinaro in the 149-pound championship match.
