U.S. Open 2012: Tiger Woods Keeping Pace With Leader, Phil Mickelson Struggling

The first round of the 2012 U.S. Open at the Olympic Club in San Francisco is well underway on Thursday, and the early groups are nearly completed with the first round. At the moment the current leader is Michael Thompson who is at 4-under par and has completed his first round. Thompson has had solid first day with seven birdies to only three bogies.

Lurking just behind Thompson is Tiger Woods who is sitting at 1-under par through 16 holes which is good to be in a tie for second place. Woods has birdied two of his last three holes, and has three birdies overall with only two bogies. Woods has been very accurate today by hitting 10-of-16 greens in regulation and is 10-for-13 in hitting the fairway.

A surprise on the other end of the leaderboard is Phil Mickelson who is struggling and is 6-over par through 16 holes. Mickelson's day started off bad as he had a bogie on each of his first three holes, and five of his first nine. Overall, Mickelson has seven bogies to only one birdie.
