French Open 2012: Maria Sharapova Two Wins Away From First Championship At Roland Garros

On Wednesday afternoon, Maria Sharapova moved one step closer to winning her first title at Roland Garros when she defeated Kaia Kanepi of Estonia in the quarterfinal round, 6-2, 6-3. The French Open is the only remaining piece missing from Sharapova completing the career Grand Slam and considering her play throughout the tournament thus far, this could be the year that she completes it.

"I love coming back here, love challenging myself to get further every year and I hope this is this year," she said.

Her opponent in the semifinal will be No. 4 seeded Petra Kvitova who defeated Sharapova in last year's final at WImbledon. Sharapova has the historical edge winning three of five matches against Kvitova including most recently on clay at Stuttgart. The semifinal match will take place on Thursday at 10 a.m. EST.
