Roger Federer, Venus and Serena Williams, and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga are all featured in Thursday night action at the U.S. Open. In the main event from the men's draw, five-time champion and top seed Roger Federer returns to action at 7:00 PM EST against German Bjorn Phau. Federer recorded a straight-set defeat over Donald Young in his opening match, and is heavily favored over the unranked Phau. Elsewhere, fifth-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga faces Martin Klizan of Slovakia in the early afternoon. Tsonga made it to the U.S. Open quarterfinals last year, where he was quickly dispatched by Federer. Other players of note in action Thursday include Edina native and No. 23 Mardy Fish (1:00), No. 11 Nicolas Almagro (11:00), No. 12 Marin CIlic (approx. 1:00), and unranked American James Blake (5:00).
On the women's side, Serena Williams faces the dangerous Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez in a second-round match at approximately 3:00 ET. Pursuing her fourth U.S. Open championship, Serena easily took care of Coco Vandeweghe in the first round. Her sister, Venus, will also be in action Thursday, facing No. 6 Angelique Kerber in one of the more intriguing matches of the day. Williams had little trouble in her first round match, but will be facing 2011 semifinalist Kerber in a match immediately following Federer-Phau. Second-ranked Agnieszka Radwanska plays Carla Suarez Navarro in an early afternoon match, as is No. 10 Sara Errani.
The full schedule is available on the U.S. Open official website. Television coverage begins on Tennis Channel at 10:30 ET, switching to ESPN2 at 1:00.
