In the game of football, winning is almost always predicated on a full team effort. But every now and then, there will be one player with an individual Herculean effort, a performance that rises above all of those around him. The other eleven players on the other side of the field and the ten players on his own team pale in comparison to this one man, pumping with adrenaline and desire. Maybe that man is a quarterback, who stands in the pocket, deftly motioning his receiver into a route adjustment and then delivers a pass while being hit from all sides by defensive linemen.
Maybe that man is a running back, with time running out and looking to break that big gain, to get to the endzone with a violent stiff arm at the five-yard line. Or maybe ... just maybe, that man is a little confused, and he burns up an awful lot of adrenaline by bowling into his own player attempting to return a football, stumbling into what is actually an impressive tackle. He probably prevented a big gain, as it happens. Such is the way of Minnesota Golden Gophers football, at least when it comes to Saturday's game against the Cornhuskers.
