Flip Saunders was fired by the Washington Wizards earlier this season as the latest stop in his NBA coaching career came to a close. The former Minnesota Golden Gophers point guard has since returned home to the Land of 10,000 Lakes, however, and has apparently been taking in some of Tubby Smith's recent practices.
Saunders is just observing as he attempts to evolve as a coach, according to comments he made to the Pioneer Press, but he says he'd return to coaching for the right opportunity.
Would the "right" opportunity come as Smith's eventual successor with the Gophers?
"I don't know; it's tough sometimes to come back to your alma mater," Saunders said. "You never can chase jobs. You just have to make sure everything is right."
Smith is still getting paid by the Wizards through next season, meaning he has some time to think about the next step in his coaching career.
