Minnesota Golden Gophers Grant Chip Armelin Release From His Scholarsip

The Minnesota Golden Gophers have released sophomore guard Chip Armelin from his scholarship, allowing him to transfer to a school closer to home and opening up a space for sixth-year forward Trevor Mbakwe. Via Tom Pelissero of 1500 ESPN Twin Cities:

"Chip has been a valuable part of our program for the past two seasons," coach Tubby Smith said in a statement released by the university.

"He has done everything we have asked of him and we are grateful for his contributions to this program on and off of the court. We are sad that he has elected to leave but certainly want to wish him the very best."

Armelin, 21, averaged 5.9 points and 2.3 rebounds per game this season for the NIT runners up.
