The 9-1-0 University of Minnesota hockey team faces off against the 4-5-1 University of Wisconsin Badgers for two games this weekend at Kohl Center. Records aside, this is an important weekend for two rivals. There may not be Paul Bunyan's Axe on the line but bragging rights and four points are two things both the Gophers and Badgers want.
Minnesota enters the weekend as the nation's top-ranked college hockey team while Wisconsin is unranked in either the USA Today or USCHO poll. Despite that, the Badgers are receiving votes in the latter poll. Wisconsin is tied for fourth in the WCHA with a 3-4-1 conference record and are coming off of a road split against St. Cloud State. Minnesota is first in the conference with a perfect 6-0-0 record and swept North Dakota 2-0 and 3-2 last weekend.
