College Hockey Rankings: Gophers Drop To 3rd/5th After Saturday Loss

College hockey resumed play this past weekend and with it comes new poll rankings. Although the holiday tournaments and non-conference games saw some of the top teams upset, there's a familiar name at the top.

Minnesota Duluth (12-3-3, 10-2-2 WCHA) remains the number one team in the country according to both the USCHO.com and USA Today/USA Hockey polls. The Bulldogs have been idle since taking three of four points from Wisconsin December 9-10 but have not lost since playing the Gophers in their second series of the season.

The defending national champions received 47 of 50 first-place votes in the USCHO poll.

Minnesota (15-6-1, 11-3-0 WCHA) fell from second in both polls to as far as fifth after being defeated Saturday by Northeastern. The Gophers are third this week in the USCHO rankings and received one first place vote.

Ohio State (14-4-1) is second in both polls while Boston College (13-7-0) is fourth. Minnesota's opponent this Saturday, Notre Dame (12-6-3), mirrors the Gophers with the Fighting Irish ranked third by USA Today and fifth by USCHO.
