Timberwolves' Michael Beasley Could Play For Puerto Rico's National Team

Michael Beasley is being courted to play with for Puerto Rico in this year's London Olympics qualifying tournament.

Presswire

Michael Beasley is involved in quite a few NBA trade rumors right now, but the Minnesota Timberwolves forward has teams from all over the world trying to contract his services. The latest team inquiring about Beasley playing for them, apparently, is the Puerto Rican National Team.

Beasley's grandfather is from Puerto Rico, according to a recent article on ESPN Deportes (via HoopsHype), and that heritage has the team trying to line him up to play for their national team.

"I have been contacted several times and I have J.J. Barea all the time in my ear telling me to join the team," Beasley said. "Carlos Arroyo did the same in Miami (when they were both members of the Miami Heat)."

Puerto Rico has a few important tournaments coming up this summer, though the most important centers on a possible bid to the 2012 London Olympics. If they are able to win that tournament -- scheduled for July in Venezuela -- it'd be a huge step for a team that includes NBA players Barea, Arroyo and Renaldo Balkman.

If Beasley is added to play with their current NBAers will be a whole 'nother story, but he was quoted by the ESPN article as saying "We'll see what happens."

Stay tuned.
