Jesse Crain: The Best Free-Agent Reliever On The Market?

So tweets Peter Gammons, who should know:

Jesse Crain may be hottest Rel. w/ Benoit signed. TB, Col, LAD, Arizona, Sea, Balt, Cubs, Wash, Tor already in. Makes sense for Bos and LAA

↵

Benoit is Joaquin Benoit, who signed with Detroit for three years at $5.5 million per year. Crain could be looking to command that type of money himself. The Twins did offer him arbitration, but with this kind of interest out there, you can probably expect Crain to turn that down flat.

↵

Crain is a Type B free agent, meaning that the Twins would get a free draft pick (a supplemental pick, between the first and second rounds) - but that won't stop any team from signing him, as the signing team won't give up anything.

↵

Crain has until 11pm Tuesday to decide whether he'll accept arbitration, or hit the market. Given this kind of buzz, along with Crain's rumored desire to try his hand at closing rather than pitching in a setup role, and you could probably expect the righty to walk this winter.
