Little Nicky Punto Signs With St. Louis Cardinals

New, 2 comments

Aye, 'tis a sad day for scrappy, no-hit, good glove middle infielders everywhere.

Jon Heyman of SI.com is reporting that Nick Punto, the bane of many a Twins fan's existence over the course of the past few seasons, due at least in part to manager Ron Gardenhire's seemingly endless love affair with the guy, has signed a contract with the St. Louis Cardinals.

Punto has been in the big leagues for 10 seasons. . .it just seems longer, I guess. . .having spent three seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies and the last seven with the Twins. The Twins acquired him in December of 2003, along with Carlos Silva, in a trade that sent pitcher Eric Milton to the Phillies.

In his time in Minnesota, he's compiled a .248 batting average, 12 home runs, and 194 RBI. He also played all over the diamond, seeing significant time at second base, third base, shortstop, and even in the outfield. He did play pretty outstanding defense at whatever position he was called on to play, so we have to give him credit where credit is due for that.

We wish Nick Punto the best in his future endeavors at the Major League level. And we wish former SB Nation Minnesota writer Jon Marthaler luck in his quest to write new jokes now that Nick Punto has moved on to another team.
