Mauer Takes Ground Balls At First Base Prior To Monday's Game

Well, this is a potentially interesting development.

Twins' all-star catcher Joe Mauer, who has been back from his most recent injury for about a week now, took ground balls at first base during infield practice prior to the Twins' Monday night game against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Target Field. However, when the lineup cards were presented, Mauer started at his usual spot behind the plate.

The Twins will be without first baseman Justin Morneau, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list last week. Morneau will have surgery on his neck on Wednesday, and will be out until at least August.

Outfielder Jason Kubel, who is currently on the disabled list, took ground balls at first base this evening as well. Kubel will head for Fort Myers tomorrow to begin a rehab assignment. He will play three games at Fort Myers and three with New Britain before a decision is made on whether or not to bring him back to the big club.

Meanwhile, the Twins are currently on pace to lose their sixth consecutive ball game, enough to almost totally cancel out the eight-game winning streak they went on earlier this month. They currently trail the Dodgers 8-0 in the top of the fifth inning at Target Field.
