Twins Leave Detroit With A Whimper, Tigers Complete Sweep 2-1

They came. They saw. They did anything but conquer.

The Twins dropped their final game of the season against the Tigers, making their record in September even worse at 2-8. At this point, "mailing it in" doesn't even begin to describe what Minnesota is doing down the stretch.

The Twins' offense was abysmal yet again, stranding runners on the few occasions they were able to mount a threat. But that shouldn't come as much of a surprise considering the lineup the Twins went with: everybody but Joe Mauer has a batting average of .237 or lower.

Scott Diamond had a shaky start, allowing Detroit's only two runs (one earned) in the first inning. However, he fought back well and ended up going six innings while allowing seven hits and four walks. Diamond was able to get out of a lot of jams thanks to the Twins turning five double plays on defense. But scoring one run won't win you many baseball games. Jose Valverde struck out Rene Tosoni to end a Minnesota threat in the 9th and the Tigers held on for the close victory.

Mercifully, the Twins have a day off on Monday before taking on the Royals in Kansas City on Tuesday for the first tilt of a two-game series.

Maybe they'll do a little better in KC, and you know, like, win once or twice.
