Vikings To Sign R.J. Archer Off Of Practice Squad

According to an NFL source, the Minnesota Vikings intend to sign quarterback R.J. Archer off of the practice squad and place him on the active roster in time for Monday night's game against the Chicago Bears at TCF Bank Stadium.

Archer, an undrafted free agent from William and Mary, spent part of training camp with the Vikings before being released and was re-signed to the practice squad a couple of weeks ago after Brett Favre was injured against the Buffalo Bills.

The Vikings will, in all likelihood, have to place somebody on the injured reserve list to make room for Archer on the 53-man roster. From the sounds of things, that somebody is likely to be all-world guard Steve Hutchinson, who hasn't played since breaking his thumb against the Washington Redskins back on November 28.

That means that, going into this Monday night game against Chicago, the Vikings' quarterback depth chart consists of, in order, rookie Joe Webb, journeyman Patrick Ramsey, and now Archer. Bet you didn't see that coming at the beginning of the year, did you?
