Chad Greenway fined $21,000 for helmet-to-helmet hit

A fourth quarter hit from the veteran linebacker on Lions WR Calvin Johnson drew a penalty.

Vikings linebacker Chad Greenway laid an illegal, helmet-to-helmet hit on Lions receiver Calvin Johnson and now he's received a sizable fine from the NFL for it. The NFL doled out a $21,000 fine on Greenway, which he will appeal, though he admitted guilt for the hit after the game.

After the game, Greenway told Tom Pelissero of ESPN Radio that he expected a fine and that he was remorseful for the hit:

"For me, as a player, I'm thinking, he's going to catch that ball 99 percent of the time. He didn't that time, so when I go up to try to break the ball up, my pad -- it's clear on the tape that it hits his head. What are you going to do? They're going to throw the flag and I'm probably going to be assessed a fine and that's just the way they're going to do it."

Through four games, Greenway has tallied 44 tackles and two sacks.
