According to Tom Pelissero of ESPN Twin Cities, the Minnesota Vikings have worked out ex-Chicago Bears wide receiver Chris Summers. The team is looking for help at the wide receiver position for a number of reasons. Second-year quarterback Christian Ponder is enjoying targets like Percy Harvin, Kyle Rudolph and new addition John Carlson, not to mention the explosive Jerome Simpson, but the latter is set to miss the first three games of the season due to a suspension.
As such, Minnesota is looking for players like Devin Aromashodu, Stephen Burton, Jarius Wright and Emmanuel Arceneaux to step it up in his absence. Unfortunately, those aren't names that inspire a ton of confidence. Those guys will get a chance to show their worth in the fourth preseason game, as Harvin and other starters are set to get some rest, but they're still looking outside of the organization.
Summers is 23 years old and is a big, athletic target, which could be perfect for Ponder. He had 188 catches for 2,712 yards and 26 touchdowns in four seasons at Liberty. As the report notes, he also broke Simpson's Big South Conference record with 1,081 receiving yards in 2010.
Any signing likely wouldn't take part in Thursday's final preseason game for the Vikings.
