(Sports Network) – Brian Duensing shoots for a fourth straight win this afternoon when the Minnesota Twins try to avoid a three-game sweep at the hands of the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park.

Duensing started the year in the Twins bullpen, but has been tremendous since joining the rotation, as he is 7-1 with a 2.43 earned run average in 11 games as a starter. He beat the Cleveland Indians on Monday, holding them to three runs and six hits in six innings, upping his overall mark to 10-2 to go along with a 2.19 ERA.

The 27-year-old has completed at least six innings 10 times, and he’s allowed more than one home run in just one of his 51 appearances.

Duensing, who will be the team’s Game 3 starter in the ALDS, has faced the Tigers 11 times (three starts) and is 1-1 with a 1.95 ERA.

Detroit, meanwhile, will counter with young right-hander Rick Porcello, who is 9-11 with a 5.22 ERA. Porcello did not get a decision on Monday against Kansas City, as he allowed five runs and 12 hits in 5 1/3 innings of a 7-5 win. He has won his last four decisions and the Tigers are unbeaten in his last five and seven of his last eight starts.

Porcello lost to the Twins the last time he faced them and is 1-3 in six starts against them with a 3.15 ERA.

The Tigers moved to the cusp of a sweep over the American League Central champions with a dramatic win on Saturday, as Brandon Inge drove in the game- winner with a single in the bottom of the 13th inning, helping Detroit to an 11-10 win.

Miguel Cabrera, Don Kelly, and Alex Avila each homered for the Tigers, who have won three in a row and seven of eight. Detroit had 21 hits.

Starter Jeremy Bonderman gave up seven runs on nine hits over four-plus innings. Daniel Schlereth (1-0) tossed 1 2/3 scoreless frames to pick up the win.

Danny Valencia hit a grand slam and a solo homer for the Twins, who got a solo homer and two RBI from Jason Kubel. Carl Pavano allowed seven runs on 11 hits during a four-inning start.

The Twins went on to load the bases with one out in the top of the 13th. Kubel and Valencia struck out to keep it a tie game.

Pat Neshek (0-1), who struck out the side in the 12th, stayed on to pitch the 13th for Minnesota. Johnny Damon and Cabrera singled to begin the frame. Jhonny Peralta then reached first on Valencia’s fielding error to load the bases. Randy Flores came in from the bullpen and Brennan Boesch hit a sharp grounder right back at him. The ball deflected off Flores’ glove and second baseman Orlando Hudson picked up the baseball and threw home for the force out. Inge followed with the game-winning base hit to right.

“No matter what you did in the beginning of the game maybe it’s the last one that always counts,” Inge said. ,

Minnesota has won nine of its 17 matchups with the Tigers this season, but is just 2-6 in the eight games contested in Detroit.

(Sports Network) - Jhonny Peralta hit a three-run homer and drove in a total of four runs to back Justin Verlander's fourth complete game of the season, as the Detroit Tigers dominated the Minnesota Twins, 10-1, in the opener of a three-game series at Comerica Park.

Casper Wells hit a solo homer and knocked in a total of three runs for the Tigers, who have won six of seven. Miguel Cabrera hit a two-run homer.

Verlander (18-8) gave up one unearned run on five hits to win his fifth straight decision. The right-hander also struck out 11 batters and walked none. The four complete games is a career-high.

Michael Cuddyer drove in the lone run for the Twins, who secured the American League Central title on Tuesday. Minnesota saw a three-game win streak come to an end, and it is tied with Tampa Bay atop the AL standings in the race for home-field advantage.

Francisco Liriano (14-9) went three-plus innings before leaving the game due to illness. He gave up two runs on four hits to suffer his second straight loss.

After giving up a leadoff single to Denard Span in the top of the first, Verlander retired eight straight batters prior to Span's two-out single in the third. Span stole second before Orlando Hudson grounded out.

The Tigers broke a scoreless tie in the fourth. Ryan Raburn singled and crossed the plate on Cabrera's homer to left-center field. Peralta walked and Wells came to the plate. The trainers came out of the dugout to tend to Liriano, who left the game with an illness. Jeff Manship came in from the bullpen and got out of the frame without further damage.

Detroit scored four times in the sixth to break the game open. Raburn and Cabrera hit back-to-back singles to get things started. Peralta followed with an RBI single. Wells then hit a two-run triple to left. Jose Mijares came in from the bullpen and Brennan Boesch hit a sacrifice fly to make it a 6-0 game.

The Tigers tacked on four more runs in the seventh. With men on first and second and two outs, Peralta smacked Alex Burnett's offering over the wall in left-center field. Wells made it back-to-back homers with a blast to left for a 10-0 lead.

Verlander stayed on to pitch the ninth in hopes of recording his first shutout of the season. With one out, Span reached first on Peralta's error. Jason Kubel singled two batters later to put men on first and second with two outs. Cuddyer's RBI base hit up the middle ruined Verlander's shutout bid. Delmon Young flied out to end the game.

Game Notes

(Sports Network) - Carl Pavano tries to match the best single-season win total of his career this evening, when the American League Central champion Minnesota Twins continue their three-game series against the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park.

Pavano, who won 18 games with the Florida Marlins back in 2004, hasn't pitched since September 16, when he won for the second time in three starts despite allowing five runs and eight hits in just five innings against the Chicago White Sox.

Recently named the Twins' No. 2 starter for the playoffs, Pavano is 17-11 with a 3.60 ERA. He was given extra rest this week as he dealt with a stiff neck.

Pavano beat the Tigers the last time he faced them and is 5-2 lifetime against them with a 2.97 ERA in eight starts.

If the Twins are going to claim the best overall record in the American League, they will have to be better than they were in the opener of this set on Friday.

Jhonny Peralta hit a three-run homer and drove in a total of four runs to back Justin Verlander's fourth complete game of the season as Detroit rolled to a 10-1 win last night. Casper Wells hit a solo homer and knocked in a total of three runs for the Tigers, who have won six of seven, while Miguel Cabrera added a two-run blast.

Verlander (18-8) gave up one unearned run on five hits to win his fifth straight decision. The right-hander also struck out 11 batters and walked none.

"He was real good. He had a really good curveball again," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said of Verlander.

Michael Cuddyer drove in the lone run for the Twins, who secured the American League Central title on Tuesday. Minnesota saw a three-game win streak come to an end and is tied with the AL East-leading Tampa Bay Rays for the best record in the Junior Circuit.

Francisco Liriano (14-9), who will be the team's Game 1 starter in the ALDS, went three-plus innings before leaving the game due to illness. He gave up two runs on four hits to suffer his second straight loss.

"I've been sick since my last start," Liriano said. "I've got allergies now, and I feel dizzy. I haven't eaten well in three or four days. I feel real weak. I think I'll be OK for my next start. Hopefully, I'll be OK."

Tonight Detroit will rely on the right arm of Jeremy Bonderman, who is 8-9 with a 4.92 ERA. Bonderman did not get a decision on Sunday against the White Sox, as he surrendered three runs (one earned) and seven hits in 5 2/3 innings of a 9-7 Tigers' win.

Bonderman has faced the Twins 18 times (16 starts) and is 5-6 with a 5.35 ERA in those outings.

Minnesota has won nine of its 16 matchups with the Tigers this season, but is just 2-5 in the seven games contested in Detroit.
