It doesn't seem like it was all that long ago that the Minnesota Twins were within five games of the top spot in the American League Central. However, the team has stumbled as of late, and now finds themselves farther back. . .maybe too far back to realistically make a run at this point.

This is what the American League Central race looks like today:

With just 51 games remaining in their 2011 season, the Twins are now closer to last place than they are to second, and can't afford to fall any farther behind. They can attempt to make up some ground this weekend as they play a three-game set against the Chicago White Sox. The division-leading Detroit Tigers will be taking on the last-place Kansas City Royals, while the Cleveland Indians will be traveling outside the division with a three-game series in Arlington against the Texas Rangers.

The Minnesota Twins were presented a golden opportunity to make a serious dent into the lead of the Detroit, as they hosted the Tigers for a weekend four game series at Target Field. What happened? Well, they lost three of four, and instead of being as little as four back, they are now a full seven games out, and to make matters worse, they face Texas tonight to begin a 10 game road trip.

Here are your up to date standings:

Detroit 54-47 .535 —
Cleveland 51-48 .515 2.0
Chicago 49-51 .490 4.5
MINNESOTA 47-54 .465 7.0
Kansas City 42-59 .416 12.0

The good news is that there is plenty of time to make up those 7 games. With approximately 9 weeks left in the season, it amounts to less than one game a week. But the Twins will have to play better against the better teams in the league if they want to make that move.

And Texas is definitely one of the league’s better teams.

The Minnesota Twins had an opportunity to make some serious progress in their four-game series against the Cleveland Indians at Target Field this week. However, when all of the dust had settled and the series was over, the Twins found themselves no closer than they were before the series got underway.

Of course, they were also no further away, which was nice to see after they dropped both halves of a doubleheader to the Indians on Monday.

As you can see, things are almost exactly the way they were the last time we gave you a standings update. Detroit and Cleveland are still tied for the top spot, and Minnesota is five games out. The only slight difference is that the White Sox are now 4.5 games back rather than four.

The Twins have another opportunity to improve their lot over the course of the next few days, as they'll open up a four-game set with the Tigers at Target Field on Thursday night. The other two teams currently locked into the American League Central race, the White Sox and Indians, will begin a three-game set in Cleveland starting on Friday, so Twins fans will need to keep an eye on that as well.

The dramatic turnaround of the Minnesota Twins has continued, as they took three out of four from the Kansas City Royals in their first series after the All-Star break.
Yes, after being as far as 16.5 games out of first place in late May and early June, the Twins now find themselves just five games in back of division co-leaders Detroit and Cleveland.

With the Twins' upcoming schedule, they are in a position to make some serious hay. The team will play eight games in the next seven days. All of them will be at home, and all of them will be against the top two teams in the division. They will kick off a four-game series against the Indians with a day/night doubleheader on Monday afternoon (to make up for the rainout that occurred back on April 22), and they will follow that up with a four-game series against the Tigers beginning on Thursday.

This week can make or break the season for the Minnesota Twins. If they can get a bunch of victories over the top two teams in the division, they will be in the race through the end of the season. If they should suddenly cool off, they might decide to become sellers and get out of the race while they have some trade chips with some value.

On June 1, the Minnesota Twins were 20 games under .500 at 17-37, and 16.5 games out of first place in the American League Central, going through as bad a stretch of baseball as we've seen in Minnesota in a very long time.

The Twins find themselves 6.5 games out of first place after 89 games. As Twins fans know, this is certainly not an insurmountable deficit. In 2009, the team's final season at the Metrodome, the Twins found themselves seven games behind the Tigers on September 1. In case you may have forgotten, here's how that whole thing ended.

Overcoming a 6.5-game deficit in 73 games is not the craziest thing anyone has ever heard of. . .particularly when you figure that the Twins are still waiting for the returns of Justin Morneau, Jason Kubel, Denard Span, and others. Figure in the fact that the Tigers have never finished over .500 in the second half of the season in the Jim Leyland era, the Cleveland Indians are still pretty young, and the White Sox have never seen a second half of the season that they couldn't fall apart in, and it should make for a pretty interesting second half of the regular season.

Bet you couldn't have imagined yourself saying that back on June 1, could you?

I know I certainly didn't expect it.
