The Minnesota Golden Gophers trailed the Iowa Hawkeyes 21-10 early in the fourth quarter of their battle for Floyd of Rosedale at TCF Bank Stadium on Saturday afternoon, but Jerry Kill's team showed some serious heart and intestinal fortitude by mounting a brilliant comeback. The Gophers scored the final twelve points of the ball game and held Iowa at the end to retain the bronze pig by a score of 22-21.

The first quarter was scoreless, despite the fact that the Hawkeyes reached Gopher territory on all three of their possessions in the quarter. Those three possessions resulted in a turnover on downs, a punt, and a missed 24-yard field goal by Hawkeye kicker Mike Meyer. The Gophers punted on their first three possessions, but after the missed field goal, Duane Bennett fumbled the ball back to the Hawkeyes near midfield, and Iowa capitalized, completing a 10-play, 53-yard drive that concluded with a 12-yard touchdown pass from James Vandenberg to Marvin McNutt. That gave the Hawkeyes a 7-0 lead.

Minnesota answered back immediately on the next drive, as quarterback MarQueis Gray found freshman wide receiver Devin Crawford-Tufts for a 60-yard completion that took the Gophers down to the Iowa 16-yard line. A few plays later, Minnesota found the end zone on a 3-yard pass from Gray to tight end Collin McGarry to tie the score at 7.

After a three-and-out coming out of the locker room by the Gophers, the Hawkeyes drove for another score. McNutt was the featured player on the drive for Iowa, as he caught a 23-yard pass from Vandenberg on the first play of the drive, and took a handoff for 19 yards to put Iowa at the Gophers' 6-yard line. A couple plays later, sophomore running back Marcus Coker, who rushed for 252 yards on 32 carries on the afternoon, found the end zone from a yard out to give the Hawkeyes the lead, 14-7.

Following another Minnesota three-and-out, the Hawkeyes were driving again until Vandenberg got blindsided on a blitz by Kyle Henderson, forcing a fumble that was recovered by Brandon Kirksey. Kirksey rumbled to midfield, and the Gophers had captured the momentum. They turned the ensuing possession into a 28-yard field goal by Jordan Wettstein to cut the deficit to 14-10. On the next Iowa drive, they marched right down the field and scored again, with Coker getting his second 1-yard touchdown run of the afternoon to make the score 21-10.

The Gophers took the ball back on offense again with 13:51 left, and proceeded to hold on to the ball for the next eleven minutes and three seconds, running twenty-six consecutive offensive plays. How did they do that? Well, they put together an 11-play, 80-yard drive that concluded with a 1-yard scoring run by Bennett to cut the lead to 21-16. The two-point conversion failed, and it looked like the Gopher defense would have to hold.

However, Jerry Kill called for an onside kick, and the Gophers recovered at their own 41-yard line. From there, the Gophers put together what might be the best offensive drive you'll see all season, as they mixed the run and pass brilliantly and moved deep into Iowa territory. A third-and-goal from the Iowa 2-yard line got moved back five yards because of a false start, and Gray found Brandon Green for four yards to set up fourth-and-goal from the 3. Gray took the snap, rolled out to the right, and took off for the end zone himself, finding pay dirt and moving the score to 22-21, Minnesota. Another two-point conversion attempt failed, and the Hawkeyes got the ball back at their own 26-yard line with 2:48 left on the clock.

The Gophers' defense stiffened up in a big way on the last Iowa drive. Vandenberg threw three consecutive incompletions, and a false start by Iowa had the Hawkeyes looking at 4th-and-15 from the 21. Vandenberg dropped back to pass, saw nobody open, and decided he could run for the first down. However, Kyle Henderson and Mike Rallis brought him down after a 9-yard gain, six yards short of the sticks, and the Hawkeyes turned it over on downs. One Minnesota first down later, and the Gophers went into the victory formation.

A lot of Gophers played outstanding games this afternoon. Gray went 11-for-17 for 193 yards through the air, and added 11 carries for 62 yards and another score on the ground. Crawford-Tufts had his first 100-yard game, as he only caught two passes, but they went for exactly 100 yards on the afternoon. Duane Bennett more than made up for his early fumble, carrying the ball 20 times for 101 yards and a score. The defense, which had allowed more than 40 points in each of their first three Big Ten games, also stepped up in a big way on Saturday afternoon.

The Gophers will travel to East Lansing next week to take on the Michigan State Spartans, who lost to the Nebraska Cornhuskers this afternoon by a score of 24-3. The Hawkeyes will travel to Ann Arbor to take on the Michigan Wolverines, who blew out the Purdue Boilermakers today by a final tally of 36-14.

Following the Golden Gophers effort to tie it at the end of the first half, the Iowa Hawkeyes responded with a touchdown to go back up 14-7. On their first possession of the third quarter, they drove 63 yards on eight plays and capped it off with a Marcus Coker one-yard touchdown. Coker ran the ball four times on the drive, and was helped out by a 19-yard rush from Marvin McNutt.

Minnesota were forced to punt on their next drive and then had to endure Iowa moving the ball again on their next posession. Coker gained eight yards, then seven and six more after that. They pushed to the Minnesota 14-yard line before James Vandenberg was sacked by Kyle Henderson and fumbled the ball. The play ultimately resulted in a turnover and with a 39-yard completion to Devin Crawford-Tufts, they were set up in field goal range. Jordan Wettstein ended up nialing the 28-yard field goal and the Golden Gophers trailed 14-10.

The quarter came to an end with Iowa driving at the Minnesota 21-yard line.

The Minnesota Golden Gophers put together an emphatic answer to Iowa's first touchdown drive of the game, responding with one of their own and tying the battle for Floyd of Rosedale at seven just before halftime.

On the second play of the drive, quarterback MarQueis Gray dropped back and found freshman wide receiver Devin Crawford-Tufts wide open down the right side for a 61-yard gain, moving the Gophers into Iowa territory for the first time today at the 16-yard line. Gray and Donnell Kirkwood alternated rushes for a few plays after that to get the Gophers inside the Iowa 10-yard line, and on 3rd-and-goal from the 3, Gray found tight end Collin McGarry for a touchdown pass to tie the game at seven.

We're under a minute to play in the first half at TCF Bank Stadium, and the Minnesota Golden Gophers and the Iowa Hawkeyes are tied in the annual Floyd of Rosedale game, 7-7.

The Iowa Hawkeyes have kept the Minnesota Golden Gophers in the battle for Floyd of Rosedale, thanks to a couple of missed field goals, but it was a Minnesota miscue that set up the Hawkeyes' first score of the day to give the visitors a 7-0 lead.

After Mike Meyer had his second field goal miss of the afternoon, this one off of the left upright from 43 yards out, the Gophers took possession at their own 25-yard line. After an 18-yard pass to Da'Jon McKnight moved the Gophers ahead, Duane Bennett fumbled on the next play, and the Hawkeyes found themselves at their own 47.

It took the Hawkeyes 10 plays to move the 53 yards to get into the end zone, including a quarterback sneak on a fourth down by Iowa signal caller James Vandenberg, but Iowa got it done. The finishing touch came on a 12-yard pass from Vandenberg to Marvin McNutt for the touchdown, and a 7-0 Iowa lead.

We have five minutes remaining in the first half of the battle for the bronze pig, and the Minnesota Golden Gophers trail 7-0.

We're only a quarter into the battle for Floyd of Rosedale, and we are still looking at a fairly close game. However, if the Minnesota Golden Gophers don't take a few more steps to stop. . .or at least slow down. . .Iowa sophomore running back Marcus Coker, it might not remain that way for long.

Coker already has nine carries for 102 yards in the first quarter of play, but we are still scoreless at TCF Bank Stadium, as the Gophers and Hawkeyes are still scoreless.

While the Gophers have gone three and out on their first two first quarter possessions, the Hawkeyes have managed to get into Minnesota territory on all three of their drives. On all three drives, however, the Hawkeyes threw passes well short of the first down marker and failed to convert. On their first drive, facing a 4th-and-6 at the Minnesota 35, the Hawkeyes converted a pass for four yards. Looking at 3rd-and-8 on their second drive from the Minnesota 49, Iowa settled for another four-yard pass.

On their third drive, a 50-yard run by Coker put the Hawkeyes deep in Minnesota territory, but kicker Mike Meyer missed a 24-yard field goal wide to the left. The Gophers have taken advantage of that going into the first quarter intermission, as three straight carries by Duane Bennett have moved Minnesota to near midfield, and have given them their first two first downs of the afternoon.

We're through one quarter at TCF Bank Stadium in the battle for Floyd of Rosedale, and the Gophers and Hawkeyes are still scoreless.

The Gophers have more than a rivalry game to worry about today though as they just try to put together a solid 60 minutes of football against the always tough Hawkeyes.

This Saturday in Minneapolis, the Minnesota Golden Gophers and the Iowa Hawkeyes will do battle for the bronze statue known as Floyd of Rosedale. This is one of the few "trophy series" that the Gophers have a lead in, having won 40 of the previous 76 match-ups, losing 34 and tying with the Hawkeyes two times.

Floyd of Rosedale. . .and it's not "the" Floyd of Rosedale, but simply Floyd of Rosedale. . .came about as a wager between the governors of the states of Iowa and Minnesota back in 1935. The previous season, the Hawkeyes had accused the Gophers of some rough treatment of halfback Ozzie Simmons, one of the few black players in college football at the time, and the situation got even uglier the next year between fans of the Gophers and fans of the Hawkeyes. Gophers' head coach Bernie Bierman received a lot of threatening letters from Iowa fans, and required special police protection when the team got off of the train in Iowa.

So, in order to lighten the mood, Minnesota Governor Floyd Olson sent a telegram to Iowa Governor Clyde Herring to place a small wager on the 1935 contest. The telegram read as follows:

Minnesota folks are excited about your statement about the Iowa crowd lynching the Minnesota football team. I have assured them that you are a law abiding gentleman only trying to get our goat...I will bet you a Minnesota prize hog against an Iowa prize hog that Minnesota wins.

Herring accepted the bet, and the wager was on between the two teams. Minnesota went on to defeat Iowa in that contest by a score of 13-6, and Herring made good on his bet. The pig was donated by Allen Loomis, the owner of Rosedale Farms near Fort Dodge, Iowa, and was dubbed Floyd after Governor Olson.

The actual pig itself was given away by Governor Olson in an essay contest. Since the two schools could not continue wagering an actual, live pig, Olson commissioned sculptor Charles Brioscho to capture Floyd's image, which he did in the statue that we all know as Floyd of Rosedale today.

Floyd will be at TCF Bank Stadium this weekend. Hopefully the Hawkeyes won't have to make room for him on the trip back to Iowa City.

Minnesota is the current owner of Floyd, having won the trophy back last season after three straight Hawkeye wins.

The Hawkeyes come in hoping to keep pace with Michigan State in the Legends Division, however, and Minnesota is averaging only slightly better than 10 points per game in Big Ten play. Of Minnesota's 31 points scored in Big Ten play none have come before the Gophers trailed by at least 31 points.

The Hawkeyes come in having won two in a row over Northwestern and Indiana, and they need just one more victory to clinch bowl eligibility.
